India's First Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 'Vikrant' Handed Over to Navy

  • The Cochin Shipyard handed over to the Navy the first indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant, which was designed by the Navy's in-house Directorate of Naval Design and will likely be commissioned on August 15.
  • It is named after India's first aircraft carrier, the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant, which played a significant role in the 1971 war. The 262-metre-long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes, much larger and advanced than her predecessor.
  • The aircraft carrier will be initially with the western naval command.

Bangladesh to Purchase Turkish Drones

  • As per reports, Bangladesh is set to purchase Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones.
  • Turkish ambassador to Bangladesh Mustafa Osman Turan confirmed the news.
  • The Bayraktar TB2 is a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) capable of remotely controlled or autonomous flight operations. Bayraktar drones were deployed by a number of other nations around the world in various wars, such as by Azerbaijan in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and by Ukrainian forces during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  • Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) successfully delivered to the Indian Army the indigenously developed Quick Reaction Fighting Vehicle-Medium (QRFV).
  • The vehicle will enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Army in future conflicts and war-like situations.
  • In April, Chief of Army Staff General MM Naravane had inducted the first set of QRFV. As per a defence release, the Army Chief had inducted the QRFV, Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicle (IPMV), Ultra Long Range Observation System developed by TASL and Monocoque Hull Multi-Role Mine-Protected Armoured Vehicle developed by Bharat Forge.

India and Japan Conduct Maritime Partnership Exercise in Andaman Sea

  • A Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) was conducted between Japan Maritime Self Defense Force and Indian Navy in the Andaman Sea.
  • INS Sukanya, an offshore patrol vessel and JS Samidare, a Murasame class destroyer, undertook various exercises including seamanship activities, aircraft operations and tactical manoeuvres as part of the operational interaction.
  • The two countries have been carrying out regular exercises in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) aimed towards reinforcing maritime association.
  • The exercises conducted were aimed at enhancing interoperability and streamlining seamanship and communication procedures. This exercise was part of the ongoing efforts between the two navies towards ensuring safe and secure international shipping and trade in the IOR.

BEL Signs Rs. 250 crore Contract with MoD

  • Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) signed a contract worth Rs. 250 crore with the Ministry of Defence for the supply of Integrated Anti-Submarine Warfare systems (IAC MOD C) for surface ships of the Indian Army.
  • The indigenously developed IAC MOD C by BEL in association with DRDO would be able to compute fire control solutions and facilitate the firing of ASW weapons such as Torpedoes and Rockets. It can also help the fire control system to customise requirements for small ships and large configurations of ships.

Govt. Gives 'In-principle Approval' for 10 pc Quota for Agniveers in CAPFs

  • The government gave "in-principle approval" for 10 per cent reservation in the Central Armed Police Forces like the CRPF and BSF for 'Agniveers' after their service in the military, Rajya Sabha was informed.
  • Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai also said that a whopping 30.41 lakh candidates appeared against 60,210 posts of constables in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

Air Commodore Shrivastava Takes over as 3BRD Chief

  • Air Commodore Rajeev Shrivastava took over as the Air Officer Commanding, No. 3 Base Repair Depot (3BRD) at Chandigarh.
  • Commissioned in the Aeronautical Engineering Branch of the IAF in March 1991, he has held numerous important field and staff appointments that include Commanding Officer of No.2 Tettra School, Chief of Aircraft at 3BRD and Chief Engineering Officer at Air Force Station, Mumbai.
  • He has served with the United Nations Mission in Congo from 2004-2005.
  • An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and College of Defence Management, Hyderabad, he has been awarded the Chief of the Air Staff Commendation twice.

Narendra Modi Unveils 'SPRINT Challenges' Collaborative Project for Indian Navy

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled 'SPRINT challenges', aimed at giving a boost to the usage of indigenous technology in the Indian Navy.
  • Modi unveiled the initiative at a naval seminar organised to engage Indian industry and academia towards achieving self-reliance in the defence sector.
  • The seminar was organised by the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM).
  • The NIIO, in cooperation with the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), aims to induct at least 75 new indigenous technologies/products into the Indian Navy in sync with 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' commemorating 75 years of the country's Independence.
  • This collaborative project is named SPRINT — Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), NIIO and TDAC (Technology Development Acceleration Cell).
