Hubballi Airport Wins Platinum Honour for Green Initiatives

  • Hubballi Airport in Karnataka was awarded the Platinum Recognition, the highest honour, under the Green Airports Recognition 2025 by Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific and Middle East. This achievement highlights the airport's excellence in promoting sustainable energy practices among airports handling fewer than six million passengers annually.
  • Hubballi Airport, operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), made a major leap in sustainability by winning the Platinum Honour at the ACI Green Airports Recognition 2025. The award, presented during the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Regional Assembly held in New Delhi, recognised the airport's outstanding initiatives in the "Sustainable Energy at Airports" category. AAI's innovative 8 MW solar power plant at Hubballi, commissioned in 2022, plays a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions and promoting green energy across multiple airports in Karnataka, making it a landmark achievement in India's journey towards net-zero emissions.

Similipal Officially Accorded as National Park's Status

  • Similipal, a unique and ecologically rich region in Odisha, was officially accorded national park status by the Odisha government. After decades of anticipation, this significant move places Similipal as the 107th national park in India and the second in Odisha, after Bhitarkanika.
  • Similipal National Park spans 845.70 sq km, divided into 11 ranges across Similipal south and Similipal north divisions.
  • The area comprises parts of Pithabata north, Pithabata south, Nawana, Jenabil, Upper Barahkamuda, Bhanjabasa, Barehipani, Chahala, Nawana North, and Talabandha ranges.

Maharashtra Designates DPS Flamingo Lake as Conservation Reserve

Agreement Signed As India to Host International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Headquarters

  • In a move reinforcing India's global leadership in wildlife conservation, the Government of India signed a formal agreement with the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) to host its headquarters and secretariat. This agreement signifies India's commitment to protecting the world's seven major big cat species: tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma. The IBCA, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023 during the golden jubilee celebrations of Project Tiger, aims to foster global cooperation for conservation, research, and habitat preservation of these endangered species.

Panel Gives Nod to Shift Cheetahs from Kuno Park to Gandhi Sagar

  • The Cheetah Project Steering Committee cleared the relocation of some of the cheetahs from Kuno National Park to Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • The steering committee, however, advised that the relocation of the cheetahs to Gandhi Sagar, although in the same state, should be carried out with care, taking into account stress factors like the heat while moving them by road. Gandhi Sagar is about 300 kilometres from Kuno.
