Assam Okays Second Wildlife Sanctuary in Barak Valley

The Assam government approved creation of a second wildlife sanctuary in the Barak Valley.
The Barak Valley in Assam is home to multitude of birds and mammals.
Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi approved a proposal for the creation of Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary in Barak Valley of Assam will spread across an area of 320 sq. km between the Barak River and the Sonai River.
The Barak Bhuban Wildlife Sanctuary will be home to: slow loris, rhesus macaque, pig-tailed macaque, stump-tailed macaque, Assamese macaque, capped langur, phayre's leaf monkey, and hoolock gibbon.

In a Paradox, Cleaner Air is Now Adding to Global Warming

It's one of the paradoxes of global warming. Burning coal or gasoline releases the greenhouse gases that drive climate change. But it also lofts pollution particles that reflect sunlight and cool the planet, offsetting a fraction of the warming. Now, however, as pollution-control technologies spread, both the noxious clouds and their silver lining are starting to dissipate.
Using an array of satellite observations, researchers have found that the climatic influence of global air pollution has dropped by up to 30% from 2000 levels. Although this is welcome news for public health—airborne fine particles, or aerosols, are believed to kill several million people per year—it is bad news for global warming. The cleaner air has effectively boosted the total warming from carbon dioxide emitted over the same time by anywhere from 15% to 50%.

The 13th Petersburg Climate Dialogue Held in Germany

The 13th Petersberg Climate Dialogue was held in Berlin, Germany. The two-day informal ministerial meet was chaired by Germany and Egypt, hosts of this year's (2022) annual climate meet (COP-27). The informal ministerial meeting proposed to build consensus and provide political direction to resolve divergences aimed at improving the implementation of climate action, the core goal of COP-27.
Ministers and delegations from several countries recalled the urgency to move to the implementation of all the previous resolutions made during the last meeting in order to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The Petersberg Climate Dialogue paved the way for a successful global climate conference in Egypt in November. Since its inception in 2010, the Petersberg Dialogue has served as a forum for ministers to build political consensus that helps resolve differences on issues holding up progress in negotiations.

India Signs MoU with Namibia for Reintroduction of Extinct Cheetahs

India and Namibia signed a crucial memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the reintroduction of cheetahs, declared extinct in the country in 1952.
As per reports, the first batch comprising four male and four female cheetahs will arrive from Namibia in August.
The fastest land animal in the world would find a new home in the Kuno-Palpur National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district.

Britain Breaks its Record for Highest Temperature as Europe Battles Heat Wave

Britain shattered its record for highest temperature ever registered, with a provisional reading of 39.1 degrees Celsius (102.4 degrees Fahrenheit), according to the country's weather office — and the heat was only expected to rise.
The highest temperature previously recorded in Britain was 38.7 C (101.7 F), a record set in 2019. The highest temperature ever registered 39.1 C (102.4 F) was in Charlwood, England in July 2022.

Australia's Environment in 'Shocking' Decline, Report Finds

According to an anticipated report, Australia's environment is in a shocking state and faces further decline from amplifying threats.
The survey of Australia's ecological systems, conducted every five years, found widespread abrupt changes.
These can be blamed on climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and mining.
The threats are not being adequately managed - meaning they are on track to cause more problems.
