Scotland Museum Signs Deal to Return 7 Ancient Stolen Artefacts to India

  • Museums in the Scottish city of Glasgow signed an agreement with the Indian government to repatriate seven stolen artefacts to India.
  • Glasgow Life, a charitable organisation which runs the city's museums, had confirmed the handover earlier this year and the arrangement was formalised at a transfer of ownership ceremony at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in the presence of Acting Indian High Commissioner to the UK Sujit Ghosh.
  • The seven antiquities to now find their way back to India include a ceremonial Indo-Persian talwar or sword, believed to date back to the 14th century, and an 11th century carved stone door jamb taken from a temple in Kanpur.

Defence Minister Unveils Statue of Renowned Marwari Warrior Veer Durgadas Rathore in Jodhpur

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled the Statue of Veer Durgadas Rathore on his 385th birth anniversary in Rajasthan's Jodhpur.
  • Veer Durgadas Rathore single-handedly preserved the rule of the Rathore dynasty over Marwar (Jodhpur) after the death of Maharaja Jaswant Singh in the 17th century.

World's Highest Railway Bridge 'Golden Joint' Launched on Chenab in J&K

  • Decked with the national flag, the 'Golden Joint' of the Chenab Railway Bridge was launched thereby inaugurating the World's highest railway bridge.
  • To commemorate 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', the world's highest bridge in Reasi district of J&K was decked up with the Tricolour by the workers on this occasion.

Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival Begins in Mamallapuram

  • The first Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival (TNIKF), organised by Global Media Box in association with the state tourism department, began in Mamallapuram from August 13 and would conclude on August 15.
  • Tourism Minister M. Mathiventhan and Minister for Mini Small and Micro Enterprises Tha Mo Anbarasan inaugurated the mega event.
  • As per reports, in this three-day festival, professional kite flyers from various countries, including Thailand, Malaysia and the US, besides India, will take part. Of the 10 teams that participate in the festival, six are from India and four from other countries.

ISRO Launches SPARK: New Virtual Space Museum

  • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched a digital platform called the 'SPARK' space museum for showcasing several ISRO missions with an interactive interface. The digital platform known as the 'SPARK' space museum was launched by the Chairman of ISRO, S. Somnath. This idea by ISRO is a new initiative while celebrating the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav marking 75 years of Independence.
  • This digital space museum 'SPARK' has an interactive interface through which users can interact with the site easily.
  • The platform hosts several documents, images, and videos related to ISRO's launch of vehicles, satellites, and scientific missions.
  • The secretary of the Department of Spaces S. Somnath and major Directors of various ISRO centres appreciate this initiative.

Singapore's Padang Becomes Country's 75th National Monument

  • Singapore declared its 200-year-old iconic green open space Padang, a site of countless events in the country's history and from where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave his 'Delhi Chalo' slogan in 1943, as its 75th national monument as the city-state celebrated its 57th National Day.
  • Located in the heart of Singapore's civic district, the 4.3 hectare Padang is the first green, open space on Singapore's list of national monuments - the highest form of recognition for a structure or site's significance.
  • The large field - popular for sporting events such as cricket, football, hockey, tennis and lawn bowling - is one of the oldest open spaces continuously used since the 1800s.
