List of Top 10 US Universities Based on Forbes Rankings 2024

  • Forbes unveiled its annual rankings of U.S. universities for 2024, with Princeton University once again claiming the top spot for the second consecutive year. The prestigious institution excelled across all 14 evaluation criteria, which include educational excellence, financial aid, and career outcomes. Princeton boasts an acceptance rate of 6 percent, making it one of the most selective universities in the country.
  • The other 9 universities that made the top 10 are Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Yale University, University of California, Berkeley, Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Rice University and Cornell University.

Odisha Launches PM-USHA Programme to Boost Higher Education

  • Odisha government officially launched the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), a transformative initiative aimed at enhancing the state's higher education sector. The programme was introduced through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the state and the Union Education Ministry, in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan, and state Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj.
  • Under this initiative, the central government will contribute Rs 500 crore towards the development and infrastructure of higher education institutions across Odisha. Minister Pradhan described August 31 as a landmark day for the state's educational landscape, emphasising the programme's alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the National Education Policy, 2020.
  • The PM-USHA programme is designed to ensure access, equity, and excellence in higher education throughout Odisha.

Chhattisgarh Offers Interest-free Loans for Students in Maoist-affected Areas

  • Students from economically weaker families in the maoist-affected districts of Chhattisgarh will receive interest-free loans for technical and vocational higher education. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai directed a special campaign to maximise the beneficiaries under this scheme.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma announced that the Technical Education Department has been designated the nodal department for administering the Chief Minister Higher Education Loan Interest Subsidy Scheme. The scheme covers 35 technical and vocational courses, including diplomas, and undergraduate, and postgraduate degrees, with a maximum loan limit of Rs. 4 lakh.
  • Eligible students with family incomes below Rs. 2 lakh will only pay 1 per cent interest on the loans after the moratorium period, provided regular repayments are made. The state government will cover the remaining interest directly with the banks.

IIT Roorkee Concludes 10-day iRISE Workshop for Teacher Development

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) successfully wrapped up a 10-day Teachers' Development Workshop under the Inspiring India in Research Innovation and STEM Education (iRISE) programme. Conducted from August 21 to August 30, 2024, the workshop was a collaborative effort with the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Uttarakhand and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune. The primary goal was to empower teachers of classes VI to X in Uttarakhand to become innovation champions within their districts.

IIT-Roorkee, Jaro Education Jointly Launch Data Science and AI Course

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) collaborated with Jaro Education, an online platform that offers online courses in association with Indian universities, and launched a Post Graduate Certificate Programme in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • This executive programme, offered by the Continuing Education Centre at IIT Roorkee, aims to equip professionals with the essential skills and knowledge required to excel in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence.
  • The Post Graduate Certificate Programme in Applied Data Science & AI at IIT Roorkee is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience, encompassing both theoretical foundations and practical applications in these two programmes. The curriculum is continuously updated to include recent industry developments, such as Generative AI, ensuring participants are well-versed with the latest advancements, the institute claims.

CBSE, Narcotics Control Bureau Launch Anti-drugs Campaign in Delhi School

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) organised the "Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life" campaign at Modern School, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. The event, held in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle among students, teachers, and parents.
  • The programme featured a series of engaging presentations and lectures focusing on the causes, effects, and prevention strategies related to substance abuse. Speakers emphasised the importance of awareness and shared key insights into preventing drug misuse. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, allowing participants to discuss their concerns and seek guidance.

Karnataka Launches Pilot Project Experimenting with Ovitraps to Control Spread of Dengue and Malaria

  • To curb the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, the Health Department and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) installed ovitraps, a first-of-a-kind initiative in Bengaluru.
  • Ovitraps, which attract and eliminate mosquitoes, were installed in Gopalpura. The pilot programme was inaugurated by Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.
  • As part of this pilot project, 120 ovitraps were installed in various households in Gopalpura. These bio-devices are designed to specifically attract and destroy Aedes mosquitoes, which are known carriers of dengue and other diseases.

UP Government Announces Scholarships for All Students in Sanskrit Schools

  • The Uttar Pradesh government announced that it will now provide scholarships to all students enrolled in over 500 Sanskrit schools across the state, eliminating the previous requirement that their family income must be below Rs. 50,000 annually. During a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, it was decided to increase the scholarship amount for students in classes 9 to 12 in these schools.
  • The revised scholarship amount now ranges between Rs. 50 and Rs. 200 per month. According to an official statement, this is the first update in over two decades, with the last revision occurring in 2001.

CBSE Mandates 'Composite Skill Labs' in Schools to Enhance Skill-based Education

  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a directive mandating the establishment of 'Composite Skill Labs' in all affiliated schools to boost skill education as per the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). Schools are instructed to set up either a single Composite Skill Lab of 600 sq ft for classes 6-12 or two separate labs of 400 sq ft each—one for classes 6-10 and the other for classes 11-12.
  • The notification specifies that a fully equipped Composite Skill Lab is mandatory for all schools seeking new affiliations with CBSE. Schools already affiliated must set up these labs within three years.

IIT Madras Partners with IIT Ropar to Expand Opportunities for Data Science Students

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) entered into a strategic partnership that will enable IIT Madras BS Degree (Data Science and Applications) students to take campus courses at IIT Ropar with a pathway to MS admission.
  • This partnership will also facilitate the completion of IIT Madras BS Degree credits by taking courses at IIT Ropar.
  • An MoU towards this collaboration was signed today, Aug 28, 2024 by Professor V Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, and Professor Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar.

India to Host International Olympiad on Astronomy & Astrophysics in 2025

  • India will be hosting the next edition of the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). The 18th edition will be held in August 2025.
  • This announcement was made by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.
  • Meanwhile, the Indian team won one gold and four silver medals at the 17th Olympiad which was held in Brazil in August 2024. The gold medal was won by Daksh, while the silver medals were awarded to Aayush, Banibrata, Panini and Sanidhya.

Meghalaya Board to Hold Biannual Class 10 SSLC Exams from Next Academic Year

  • The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) will implement a new system for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams, offering two exam sessions each year starting from the 2025 academic year. The first session will be held in February or early March, and a second session, designed to give students who did not pass one or more subjects a chance to retake the exams, will follow in May, within one to two months after the initial session.
  • Meghalaya's Education Minister, Rakkam A. Sangma, shared that this decision, approved by the state cabinet, aims to amend the MBOSE Regulation for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination, 2011.
  • The goal is to provide students with an additional opportunity to succeed in the exams, reduce the waiting time between attempts, and align with the National Education Policy (NEP) to enhance student support and success.

Bharat Biotech Launches Oral Cholera Vaccine

  • Bharat Biotech International Ltd (BBIL) announced the launch of Hillchol, a novel single-strain oral cholera vaccine following a successful phase-III clinical trial which confirmed the safety of the jab.
  • BBIL established large-scale manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar with a capacity to produce up to 200 million doses of Hillchol, said Bharat Biotech Executive Chairman Krishna Ella.
  • He further said that the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) gave the nod to manufacture the vaccine at the company's plant in Hyderabad.
  • Hillchol (BBV131) was developed by Bharat Biotech under license from Hilleman Laboratories (funded by Merck USA and Wellcome Trust) to combat cholera.
