IIT Guwahati's 21 Researchers, Faculty Members Feature in World's Top 2% Scientist List

A total of 21 researchers and faculty members from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati featured among the world's top 2 per cent Scientist list curated by Stanford University, USA. The list also includes Professor TG Sitharam, director, IIT Guwahati.
Professor Sitharam, along with 20 other faculty members were ranked for their research publications citations using all Scopus author profiles as of September 1, and their lifetime contribution to their specific fields of research in the list.
Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields. The selection is based on the top 1 lakh scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2 per cent or above in the sub-field.
The IIT Guwahati faculty members featured in the Stanford University list are from various scientific fields including the Departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Chemistry, Electrical and Electronics.

PM inaugurates Phase 1 of Education Complex, Modi Shaikshanik Sankul

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of Modi Shaikshanik Sankul, which is an educational complex for needy students in Ahmedabad. The project aims to provide facilities to students for holistic development. Prime Minister emphasized young students taking up medicine, engineering, and other such subjects as their major streams for further studies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked parents to prepare their kids for skill development to combat difficult situations.
The event was felicitated by Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel, Members of Parliament C. R. Patil and Narhari Amin, Minister of Gujarat government, Jitubhai Vaghani, and President of Modh Vanik Modi Samaj Hitvardhak Trust.

THE World University Rankings: IISc Retains Top Spot in Indian Institutes

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) retained the top position among Indian institutes in the latest round of Times Higher Education (THE) rankings, which has been boycotted by most Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for the third consecutive year over transparency concerns.
While it is first among Indian institutions, overall, the IISc is placed in the 251-300 band. Globally, the University of Oxford emerged as the best institute among 1,799 universities from 104 countries, according to a statement issued by THE.
The second position among Indian institutions has been taken by the Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (351-400 overall), which made its debut in the rankings.

IIIT Delhi to Lead Indo-EU Collaboration for Capacity Building in Robotics

Adding another feather to its cap, the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT-Delhi) will now be leading the project IRAS-HUB, funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union (EU). The project is mostly aimed at addressing the lack of skilled talent in robotics technology in India.
To overcome the scarcity of skilled talent in robotics technology in India, the project IRAS-HUB will establish three hubs in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) in India. The hubs will be equipped with prototyping equipment and robotics software and will train researchers from Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in RAS with reputable researchers and experts from EU HEIs.
The aim of this project is the development of robotics technology for problem-solving in diverse sectors of India, such as agriculture and transportation.

National Conference on Skilling in Non-Traditional Livelihood for Girls

Women and Child Development Ministry organised National Conference on Skilling in Non-Traditional Livelihood for Girls – Betiyan Bane Kushal in New Delhi. The conference was organised under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child. Under the Betiyan Bane Kushal initiative, emphasis was laid on convergence between Ministries and Departments to ensure the skill development of girls.
The conference focused on capacity building and skill development of girls to increase their participation in the professions like science, technology, engineering and mathematics. During the event, MoUs were signed between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Ministry of Minority Affairs for Skilling of young Girls for their increased, equal, and empowered participation in the workforce.

School-to-work Transition Facing Major Hurdles in India: WEF Report

The school-to-work transition process is still facing major hurdles in India and a lack of coordinated efforts has resulted in an isolated skilling system that has not been able to achieve its maximum potential, a World Economic Forum (WEF) report stated.
The report titled 'Education 4.0 Report', on how digital and other technologies can address learning gaps and make education accessible to all, was launched as part of WEF's Education 4.0 India initiative.
India has more than 60 million secondary and higher secondary students, but 85 per cent of schools are yet to implement vocational courses as part of their curriculum.
School-to-work (S2W) transition refers to the process of making students job-ready in a rapidly evolving employment landscape.
As per the report, the S2W transition process is still facing major hurdles such as lack of trainers, inadequate resources and infrastructure, poor integration with the mainstream school curriculum, and poor linkages between localized skill gaps and vocational courses.

Jamia Millia Islamia Launches Masters in Virology Programme

Multidisciplinary Centre for Advanced Research and Studies (MCARS), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) started a two-year degree course of masters in virology.
The course would provide students with theoretical knowledge in various domains of viruses with specific focus on pathogenic viruses, their diagnostic methods, antiviral drug designing, molecular pathways of viruses and recently developed therapies such as immunotherapies and vaccines.
During the two-year course duration, students will undergo practical and hand-on-training. Students will learn how to detect the viruses using current state-of-the art technologies like RT-qPCR, genome sequencing and CRISPR-Cas Diagnostic methods besides other assays.

UGC Launches Syllabus of Cyber Security Courses at UG, PG Levels

The University Grants Commission (UGC) launched the syllabus of cyber security courses at the Under Graduate (UG) and Post Graduate (PG) levels. The syllabus aims at developing an understanding of cyber security issues even for students from non-technical streams.
Launching the syllabus, Universities Grants Commission (UGC) Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar said that cyber security as a subject needs to be incorporated at graduation and postgraduation level in all streams. The syllabus of these courses aims to create aware, responsive, and responsible digital citizens, thereby contributing effectively to an overall healthy cyber security posture and ecosystem.

First Green Tech Based Incubation Centre of India to Come up at NIT Srinagar

India's first technology business incubation centre based on green technology named "Greenovator Incubation Foundation" is coming up at National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar.
Technology Business Incubation or Inclusive TBI (i-TBI) is a three-year initiative supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for educational institutions, idea-generators, innovators and entrepreneurs to support the innovative ideas, start-up initiatives and promote self-employment and job creation through incubation.
The Department of science and technology is responsible for providing all the necessary funds for setting up the centre. The co-working space would be provided to start-ups for incubation facility, prototyping laboratory, meeting rooms, recreational facilities etc. Apart from office space, financial assistance as seed money would be given on a case-to-case basis with equity, as per the DST guidelines.
