Indian Higher Education Meet 2023 in Dhaka

  • High Commissioner Pranay Verma and Minister of Education of Bangladesh Dipu Moni jointly inaugurated the Indian Higher Education Meet 2023. It was being conducted under the aegis of the Study in India programme in Dhaka. Higher educational institutes from different parts of India participated in the event. Some of the top ranking educational institutions from India participated in the programme.
  • The High Commissioner remarked that higher education has emerged as a centrepiece of India's deep rooted partnership with Bangladesh. He also expressed his satisfaction that a large number of Indian students have been pursuing higher education in each other's country. He invited more students from Bangladesh to take advantage of India's globally reputed higher education system and build new bridges of friendship and understanding among the youth of the two countries.

V. V. Giri National Labour Institute and ASSOCHAM sign MoU to Promote Advocacy for Labour and Emp...

  • V.V. Giri National Labour Institute (VVGNLI), an autonomous body of Ministry of Labour & Employment and Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) entered into a strategic alliance by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The strategic alliance between the two organisations aims to promote professional and organisational development in labour and employment-related areas by jointly identifying and executing developmental initiatives that benefit stakeholders in the sector.
  • The objective of the alliance is to leverage the respective expertise of both organisations and collaborate on initiatives related to education, research, training, and other activities that promote the fair and transparent implementation of labour reforms which are led by the government. The synergy seeks to emanate the beneficial impact of an increased alignment to India's international commitment to labour laws and welfare in context of global policy standards and benchmark practices. The partnership is non-binding and non-exclusive, and both organisations are committed to working together in a flexible and cooperative manner towards protection of labour rights and promote safe and secure working environments of workers, including migrant and women workers in India.

More than 200 Universities to Use CUET UG this Year

  • According to University Grants Commission (UGC) officials, almost 200 universities chose to use the Common University Entrance Exam (CUET) to date for undergraduate programme admission, up from 90 universities the previous year.
  • Due to the expectation that additional colleges will choose the test for admission, the application period was extended until March 30.

IIT Roorkee to Provide 25 IG, PG Internships under SPARK Programme 2023

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) launched the SPARK internship programme 2023, an annual flagship programme of the institute.
  • Under the SPARK programme, IIT Roorkee is offering 25 UG and 10 PG internships to students from institutes within the 200 km range of IIT, as a part of its 175 years celebration. Students will also be provided a stipend of Rs. 2500 per week for 6-8 weeks.
  • The maximum duration of the UG internship will be six weeks and the PG internship will be six months long. Students will begin with their internships from the second week of May.
  • This programme aims to attract and nurture undergraduate students across India. The selected students will get to work on cutting-edge research topics with faculty members from 26 academic departments and centres. The internship is also offered in the newly established Mehta Family School of data science and artificial intelligence.

BHU Launches International Visiting Student Program for PhD Students

  • Banaras Hindu University (BHU) launched the 'International Visiting Student Program' scheme. Under this scheme research scholars of the university will get an opportunity to conduct their research in reputed global institutions outside India for a semester.
  • As per the scheme, the selected research scholars will spend one semester (nearly six months) in top 500 institutions of the world (as THE or QS rankings). The scheme aims to foster networking, facilitate collaborative research, strengthen institutional ties, developing experimental, theoretical and professional skills.
  • Research scholars who have completed their course work with 8.0 or more CGPA and have published at least two papers in their discipline in a journal of international reputation will be eligible for the programme. The research scholar will need consent from the host institution to provide necessary facilities to continue their research.

  • The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) launched a unified portal – Online@IIMA that serves as a single gateway to access all the existing and new online programmes by IIMA.
  • Through this portal, the institute is introducing a slew of innovative online certification courses to help professionals be future-ready. Students and professionals can now access the same quality IIM-A education from anywhere across the globe through this portal.

Assam to Get its 12th Medical College

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the number of medical colleges in the state will increase to 12 with a new one at Nalbari getting approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start the MBBS course from the academic session, 2023-24.
  • The Nalbari Medical College will be under Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences and have an annual intake of 100 MBBS students.
  • As per state Health Minister Keshab Mahanta, with the latest approval, the total number of MBBS seats in the state will increase to 1,500.

NTA to Conduct CUET UG in 3 Shifts; Merger with JEE, NEET to be Announced 2 Years in Advance

  • The Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG will be conducted in three shifts this year instead of two and plans for its merger with crucial entrance exams like JEE and NEET will be announced at least two years in advance, according to the UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar.
  • As per Kumar, the proposal to merge CUET with the engineering entrance exam JEE and the medical entrance exam NEET is definitely doable. The details are being worked out but whenever the merger happens, an announcement will be made at least two years in advance so the students can prepare accordingly.

BIS Launches 'Learning Science via Standards' Initiative for Students

  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, launched 'Learning Science via Standards' series for students.
  • The initiative focuses on a series of lesson plans aimed to use scientific concepts, principles, and laws to help students understand their practical applications in manufacturing, functioning, and testing of quality characteristics of different products as stated in the relevant Indian Standards.
  • The subjects for the lesson plans are largely related to products used in day-to-day life and have been chosen based on their relevance to education as part of the course curriculum as well as to industrial applications.
  • The learning 'Science via Standards' series is in continuum with an earlier BIS initiative under which 'Standards Clubs' are being established in educational institutions across India.

Bar Council of India Assures Delhi High Court of Looking into Request to Make RTE Act Compulsory ...

  • The Bar Council of India (BCI) apprised the Delhi High Court that it will look into demand of Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE Act) to be made a compulsory subject in all law schools across the country for LLB.
  • The statement was made by the counsel appearing for the BCI before a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad.
