Brazilian Dante Akira Uwai Wins Medal Design Competition for Gangwon 2024

  • Brazilian artist Dante Akira Uwai won the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 medal design competition. After six weeks and over 3,000 submissions to the International Olympic Committee competition, Akira Uwai's creation – 'A Sparkling Future' – was chosen by a panel of judges including Olympian Laurenne Ross, former winner Zakea Page, IOC Young Reporters, Young Leaders, and Gangwon 2024 Youth Supporters.
  • Akira Uwai's victory means his design will feature on the medals for Gangwon 2024 which will be awarded in the Republic of Korea from January 19 to February 1 next year (2024). Art has always been integral to the 27-year-old architect who was born in Sao Paulo and brought up in Brasilia.
  • Gangwon 2024 will be the fourth iteration of the Winter YOG, and the first in Asia. The previous editions took place in Innsbruck (2012), Lillehammer (2016), and Lausanne (2020).
  • The aim of Gangwon 2024 is to drive positive change and social unity in the region, impacting society in the areas of sport, culture and education.
  • The Gangwon 2024 programme will consist of 15 disciplines across seven sports.

Indian-American Physician Dr. Nitya Abraham Honoured with Young Urologist of the Year Award

  • An Indian-American physician and professor was honoured with the Young Urologist of the Year Award conferred by the American Urological Association (AUA).
  • Dr. Nitya Abraham is an Associate Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Program Director for the Montefiore Urology residency programme.
  • Abraham was chosen from the New York region for her accomplishments and contributions. Abraham has mentored countless students, residents, fellows and junior faculty both at her institution and others in the New York region. She is a member of the Society for Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine, and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) Young Urologists Committee and social media committee. Abraham has received funding from the US Department of Defense for urinary diagnostic markers of interstitial cystitis, and is also a co-author of the AUA White Paper on Rationale and Strategies for Reducing Urologic Post-Operative Opioid Prescribing.

President Droupadi Murmu Confers Padma Awards in Second Civil Investiture Ceremony

  • President Droupadi Murmu conferred 55 Padma Awards for the year 2023, at the second Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. She presented three Padma Vibhushan, five Padma Bhushan and 47 Padma Shri Awards.
  • Padma Vibhushan was given to ORS pioneer Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav posthumously.
  • Dr. Dilip Mahalanabis, saved millions of lives by promoting the use of Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS).
  • Kolkata-based Dilip Mahalanabis was a paediatrician who started working on oral rehydration therapy in 1966. During his stint as a research scholar at Johns Hopkins University International Centre for Medical Research in the US, a team of doctors led by Mahalanabis developed the life-saving solution.
  • The President presented Padma Bhushan to philanthropist Sudha Murthy, theoretical physicist Prof Deepak Dhar, Kannada author Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa and spiritual leader Tridandi Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji. Legendary singer Vani Jairam was given Padma Bhushan posthumously.
  • Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Home Minister Amit Shah, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur along with several other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
  • On the 22nd of last month, President Droupadi Murmu conferred 54 Padma Awards for the year 2023, at the first Civil Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Ukrainian President Decorated with Poland's Top Award

  • The highest decoration of Poland, the Order of the White Eagle, was presented to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky by the President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, during a meeting between the two leaders at the Presidential Palace in Warsaw.
  • The Order of the White Eagle is the Republic of Poland's oldest and most prestigious award. The Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland stated that Zelensky was given the award in acknowledgment of his contributions to enhancing ties between Poland and Ukraine, promoting security, and his unwavering commitment to protecting human rights.

Meghan Markle to Receive 2023 Women of Vision Award

  • The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle was named for the 2023 Women of Vision award from Gloria Steinem. The award will be handed out at the Ms Foundation's annual gala on May 16 at New York City's Ziegfeld Ballroom, as part of its 50th-anniversary celebration.
  • Ms Foundation, a Brooklyn-based organization works to bring attention to the real challenges facing women, especially women of colour and low-income women who are living in poverty. The Foundation announced that Meghan Markle will be receiving the award for her "global advocacy to empower and advocate on behalf of women and girls.
  • Not just Meghan Markle, the foundation will also honour Wanda Irving, co-founder of Dr Shalon's Maternal Action Project, and Kimberly Inez McGuire, executive director of URGE, as well as emerging leaders abortion rights activist Olivia Julianna and LGBTQ+ advocate Rebekah Bruesehoff.

Kiran Nadar Conferred with France's Highest Civilian Award

  • Philanthropist and art collector Kiran Nadar was conferred "Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur" (Knight of the Legion of Honour) by French Ambassador to India Emmanuel Lenain.
  • The highest French civilian award came in recognition of Nadar's outstanding contribution in the field of art, her commitment to providing greater access to culture both nationally and internationally, and her leading role in fostering Indo-French cultural ties.
  • Nadar, chairperson of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) — a philanthropic initiative in art — and a trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation has played a vital role in advancing Indo-French cultural ties, and artistic cooperation.
