  • Biosphere Reserves play a crucial role in the conservation of our planet's natural and cultural diversity.
  • On the International Day for Biosphere Reserves, we acknowledge the significance of these reserves in striking a balance between human development, cultural preservation, and environmental protection. As we celebrate this day, we reflect on the need to expand and support these designated areas to safeguard our shared heritage for generations to come.

NITI Aayog held Workshop on India-AU Collaboration

  • NITI Aayog has organized a workshop on India-AU Collaboration for a Better Inclusive World in partnership with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF) at the Taj Palace, New Delhi.
  • The workshop focused on deliberations to implement the commitments laid out in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration (NDLD) which was signed recently concluded G20 Conference.
  • The workshop brought together over 50 experts and participants from prominent National and International think tanks, academia, and diplomats from India and the African Union (AU).
  • The participants had in-depth discussions on three key themes:
  • Indo-AU collaboration for an inclusive world
  • Indo-AU collaboration for sustainable and resilient infrastructure

7 Indian States & 2 UTs Celebrated Their Formation Day on November 1st

  • Grand events marked the formation day celebrations across seven states and two Union Territories on November 1. 
  • The states celebrating the formation day today are Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab. The Union Territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry are also celebrating their formation day.
  • Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and MP came into being in 1956, Punjab and Haryana were carved out as separate states in 1966

Rajyotsava Day (Karnataka Formation Day)

  •  Karnataka Formation Day, also known as Kannada Rajyotsava, holds a special place in the hearts of all natives in the region. It is more than just a celebration of the state's inception. It is a colourful commemoration of Karnataka's rich legacy and diversity. The southern Indian state marked its 66th foundation day on November 1, 2023.
  • Through the Karnataka Ekikarana movement, Aluru Venkata Rao, a renowned Indian historian and writer, sought to establish the state of Karnataka. India became a republic in 1950, and distinct provinces were formed based on languages, which resulted in the formation of a Kannada-speaking region in South India on November 1, 1956.
  • The newly established state was initially named Mysore, but the name was rejected by other regions, including North Karnataka. Therefore, on November 1, 1973, the state was renamed Karnataka, which was derived from the Kannada word 'Karunadu' meaning 'lofty land'.

  • World Thrift Day has a fascinating history that traces its roots back to the aftermath of World War 1. The idea of World Thrift Day was introduced by the Italian economist Filippo Ravà during the inaugural International Thrift Congress in Italy in October 1924. His vision was to create a worldwide event that would underscore the importance of saving money, especially during challenging economic times.
  • This concept gained significant popularity and support, leading to the inaugural World Thrift Day on October 31, 1925. For those curious about the date choice, it was selected to coincide with the anniversary of the first International Thrift Congress. Since then, World Thrift Day has been celebrated in numerous countries across the globe.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day

  • National Unity Day, also called 'Rashtriya Ekta Diwas', is celebrated on October 31 every year to honour the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister after the country's independence in 1947. For his iron will and nerves of steel, he is often called the 'Iron Man of India'. For his keen initiative and sympathy, his people affectionately called him 'Sardar'.
  • The Modi government has been marking Sardar Patel's birth anniversary as the "Rashtriya Ekta Diwas" since 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the celebrations of the first Rashtriya Ekta Diwas with the 'Run for Unity' programme in Delhi. Patel was born on October 31, 1875 in Gujarat's Nadiad. He is credited for the consolidation of more than 560 princely states into the Union of India.
  • Patel died on December 15, 1950. In 1991, India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, was bestowed on him posthumously.
