Madhya Pradesh Declares New Wildlife Sanctuary Named After Dr. B.R. Ambedkar

  • The Madhya Pradesh government declared a new wildlife sanctuary in Sagar district, covering an area of 258.64 square kilometres. The sanctuary, named Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Abhyaran, was officially announced ahead of the 134th birth anniversary of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
  • The sanctuary's creation is aimed at bolstering conservation efforts in the region, ensuring the protection of flora and fauna.
  • It is designed to enhance the ecosystem by providing a protected environment for wildlife and facilitating the preservation of the region's biodiversity.
  • The sanctuary will also act as a tool to boost tourism and provide employment opportunities for the locals, which could help in the socio-economic development of the area.
  • The new sanctuary increased the number of wildlife sanctuaries in Madhya Pradesh to 25, with the state already known for its rich biodiversity and wildlife conservation efforts.
  • Madhya Pradesh is also recognised as the "Tiger State of India", with several renowned national parks and wildlife reserves such as Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Satpura, and Panna Tiger Reserves.

De-extinction of the Dire Wolf by Colossal Biosciences

  • A United States-based bioscience company claimed that it revived an extinct species of animal, the dire wolf.
  • Colossal scientists created three dire wolf pups by using ancient DNA, cloning and gene-editing technology to alter the genes of a gray wolf, the prehistoric dire wolf's closest living relative. The result is essentially a hybrid species similar in appearance to its extinct forerunner.

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh launched the first-ever 'Himalayan High-Altitude Atmospheric & Climate Centre' in Nathatop, Chenani, Udhampur district. The project, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, will enhance climate monitoring in the Himalayas.

  • Indonesia plans to clear forests about the size of Belgium to produce sugarcane-derived bioethanol, rice and other food crops, potentially displacing Indigenous groups who rely on the land to survive.
  • Local communities said that they are already experiencing harm from the government-backed project, which environmental watchdogs say is the largest current planned deforestation operation in the world.
  • Indonesia is home to the world's third-largest rainforest, home to many endangered species of wildlife and plants, including orangutans, elephants and giant forest flowers. Some live nowhere else.

India Ranks 3rd Largest Generator of Wind, Solar Power

  • India became the world's third-largest producer of electricity from wind and solar energy in 2024, overtaking Germany, to according to a new report published in April.
  • The sixth edition of global energy think tank Ember's Global Electricity Review said wind and solar together generated 15 per cent of global electricity last year. India's share stood at 10 per cent.
