Collegium Insists on Shifting Manipur CJ to Calcutta High Court

  • Rejecting his request to either shift him to his parent Madras High Court or not transfer him at all, the Supreme Court Collegium reiterated its October 9 recommendation to transfer Manipur HC Acting Chief Justice M. V. Muralidaran to the Calcutta HC for better administration of justice.
  • After consulting one of the judges of the Supreme Court conversant with the affairs of the Manipur High Court, the Collegium said it didn't find any merit in Muralidaran's request. The Collegium, therefore, resolves to reiterate its recommendation dated October 9, 2023, to transfer Justice M. V. Muralidaran to the High Court at Calcutta.

SC Collegium Recommends Elevation of Two Judicial Officers as Judges of Tripura HC

  • The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, recommended the appointment of two judicial officers as judges of the Tripura High Court.
  • The recommendation for appointment of judicial officers Biswajit Palit and Sabyasachi Datta Purkayastha as HC judges was made in December 2022 by the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues.
  • The SC Collegium said that it has consulted "colleagues" who are conversant with the affairs of the High Court of Tripura to ascertain suitability of these two names.

Justice Ritu Bahri Acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court

  • The Central government notified the appointment of Justice Ritu Bahri as the Acting Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court with immediate effect.
  • She took over from Chief Justice R. S. Jha, who retired on October 13.
  • Justice Bahri is the first woman judge appointed as Chief Justice (acting) of Punjab and Haryana High court.
  • She studied at Carmel Convent School, Chandigarh, and completed her law from Panjab University in 1985 and enrolled as an advocate in 1986.
  • She was elevated as judge of Punjab and Haryana high court on August 16, 2010. Justice Bahri is the daughter of justice Amrit Lal Bahri, who retired as judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1994.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Appointment of Five Judicial Officers as Kerala High Court Judges

  • The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, recommended the names of five Judicial Officers for appointment as as Judges of Kerala High Court.
  • the Collegium stated that the Kerala High Court Chief Justice, had recommended the elevation of the five judicial officers, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues, and that the Chief Minister and the Governor of the State had also concurred with the recommendation.
  • The following are the Judicial Officers who have been recommended to be elevated as Judges of the High Court of Kerala: M. B. Snehalatha, Johnson John, G. Girish, C. Pratheepkumar and P. Krishna Kumar.

Centre Sends 70 Names to Supreme Court Collegium for Judges' Appointment

  • After sitting on the recommendations made by collegiums of various High Courts for appointment of judges for 11 months, the Centre suddenly forwarded all 70 pending proposals to the CJI-led top court Collegium in the last few days.

Centre to Soon Clear Appointment of Justice Siddharth Mridul as Chief Justice of Manipur High Court

  • Attorney General for India R. Venkataramani assured Supreme Court that it will shortly issue a notification clearing the appointment of Delhi High Court judge Justice Siddharth Mridul as Chief Justice of Manipur High Court.
  • The Manipur High Court has been which has been functioning without a permanent Chief Justice since February 2023 and Justice P. V. Muralidharan is currently serving as its acting Chief Justice.
