Punjab and Haryana High Court Gets 11 Judges

The Centre notified the appointment of 11 advocates as additional judges, Punjab and Haryana High Court. They are Nidhi Gupta, Sanjay Vashisth, Tribhuvan Dahiya, Namit Kumar, Harkesh Manuja, Aman Chaudhary, Naresh Singh, Harsh Bunger, Jagmohan Bansal, Deepak Manchanda and Alok Jain.
The appointments took the strength of the High Court to 57 judges against a sanctioned strength of 85. They were appointed for a period of two years with effect from the date they assume charge of office.
With the appointments of 11 new High Court judges in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Government of India created a record by making 138 appointments so far this year (till August 2022) thus surpassing its earlier record of 126 High Court appointments in 2016.

Six HCs Get 26 Judges, 2 for Himachal Pradesh

Twenty-six judges were appointed to six High Courts, bringing the total number of HC judges appointed so far this year to a record 127. Of those elevated as additional judges and judges, 20 were judicial officers and six advocates. While two judges each were appointed to the High Courts of Orissa, HP and Guwahati, five were appointed to the Karnataka HC. Six judges were appointed to the Telangana HC and nine to the Allahabad HC.

Derecognising Parties over Freebies is Anti-democratic: Supreme Court

Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana acknowledged that the impact of freebies promised by political parties on the country's fiscal health was "a serious issue" but said he was not in favour of derecognising any party over it because that would be "anti-democratic".
The court also expressed its reservations on how far it can go into the issue.

SC grants Bail to Varavara Rao

The Supreme Court granted regular bail to activist and poet Dr. P Varavara Rao, an accused in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence case, on medical grounds.
A bench headed by Justice UU Lalit while grating bail to Rao said that he shall not leave the jurisdiction of Greater Mumbai without permission from the Special NIA Court at the city, he shall not misuse his liberty and nor he shall be in touch with any of the witnesses.
The apex court further ordered that Rao shall be entitled to have medical treatment of his choice and he shall keep NIA informed about the medical treatment being received by him.
The bench deleted the condition imposed by the Bombay High Court that he should surrender after 3 months.
Rao had challenged an April 13 judgment of the Bombay High Court which had rejected his plea for permanent bail.

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit Appointed 49th CJI

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was appointed 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI), a law ministry notification. He will assume charge on August 27 after incumbent N.V. Ramana demits office on August 26.
Justice Lalit would have a brief tenure of less than three months. He will turn 65 on November 8 when he demits office.
On August 4, Justice Ramana had set in motion the process of appointment of his successor by recommending the name of Justice Lalit, the most senior judge, to the Centre. The CJI personally had handed over a copy of his letter of recommendation to Justice Lalit.
