Justice Prathiba Singh Named Chair of WIPO Advisory Board

In a historic appointment, Justice Prathiba M. Singh of the Delhi High Court was selected as the Chair of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Advisory Board of Judges for the term 2025–2027. This marks the first time an Indian—and indeed someone from Asia—was appointed to this prestigious global role, representing a significant recognition of India's growing leadership in intellectual property (IP) law and policy.
The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations, headquartered in Geneva that works globally to protect and promote intellectual property rights across countries.
Its Advisory Board of Judges consists of legal luminaries and judges from around the world, who guide WIPO in aligning its policies with judicial standards across legal systems.
As Chair, Justice Singh will lead this influential body, offering strategic direction for WIPO's global judicial engagement, especially in an era where intellectual property is central to innovation, digital governance, and economic development.

Law Ministry Increases Notary Limits in Four States

To ensure wider access to essential legal documentation services, the Ministry of Law and Justice notified the Notaries (Amendment) Rules, 2025, significantly increasing the maximum number of notaries in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Nagaland. The move aims to meet the surging demand for notary services due to expanding administrative units and growing population pressures. The notification, issued under G.S.R. 763(E) on October 17, 2025, modifies the existing Notaries Rules, 1956, by exercising powers granted under the Notaries Act, 1952.
The amendment directly increases the sanctioned strength of notaries in the four states as follows,
Gujarat: Raised from 2,900 to 6,000
Tamil Nadu: Increased from 2,500 to 3,500
Rajasthan: Expanded from 2,000 to 3,000
Nagaland: Doubled from 200 to 400

Bar Council of England and Wales Hosts Family Law Symposium

The Bar Council of England and Wales, in collaboration with leading members of the Indian Bar, hosted a Family Law Symposium 2025 – Bridging Perspectives between England and Wales and India at Casuarina Hall, India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
The Symposium brought together senior advocates, barristers, academics, and mediators from both jurisdictions to exchanged expertise and strengthen professional cooperation. Key discussion themes included:
- Cross-border family disputes: Children, custody, and jurisdictional challenges
- Financial remedies and enforcement: Asset sharing across jurisdictions
- Non-court dispute resolution: Family arbitration and mediation practices

Centre extends Attorney General R Venkataramani's Term by Two Years

Senior Advocate R Venkataramani reappointed as the Attorney General of India for a further two-year term, effective October 1, 2025. His current three-year tenure, which began in September 2022, ended this month. With this reappointment, Venkataramani will serve as the country's top law officer until September 30, 2027. The reappointment was confirmed by the Ministry of Law and Justice, underscoring the government's satisfaction with his counsel and leadership in legal matters of national importance.
The Attorney General of India (AGI) is the chief legal advisor to the Government of India and represents the state in legal proceedings, especially in the Supreme Court and High Courts.
It is a constitutional post, created under Article 76 of the Constitution. The AG is appointed by the President of India on the advice of the Union Cabinet.

BITS Law School, under the aegis of BITS Pilani, announced former Chief Justice of India, Justice UU Lalit as Honorary Professor of Law. Justice Lalit will be teaching an advanced course and will be involved in academic work at BITS Law School.
Justice Lalit will be teaching an advanced course on 'Affirmative Action under the Constitution of India and Other Jurisdictions'.
