Justice Amit Sharma Takes Oath as the Permanent Judge of Delhi High Court

  • Justice Amit Sharma of the Delhi High Court took oath as permanent judge.
  • The oath to Justice Amit Chandra was administered by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma in the judge's lounge of the Delhi High Court.
  • The Central government cleared appointment of Justice Sharma as permanent judge.
  • The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Sharma to be made permanent.
  • In the resolution passed by the Supreme Court Collegium it was noted that the Delhi High Court Collegium had unanimously recommended on January 9 that Justice Sharma be made a permanent judge.

Kapil Sibal Launches New Platform 'Insaaf'

  • Rajya Sabha leader Kapil Sibal announced a new platform to fight "injustice" prevailing in the country under the BJP-led government, calling on everyone, including opposition chief ministers and leaders, to support him in his endeavour.
  • Sibal launched the platform "Insaaf" and a website "Insaaf ke sipahi" to help people rise in the fight against injustice with lawyers at the forefront of the initiative.

  • In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court held that lawyers having at least 10 years standing were eligible for appointment as President and members of both the State and District Consumer Commissions.
  • Upholding the order of the Bombay High Court (Nagpur Bench) over the matter, the Bench of Justice M.R. Shah and Justice M.M. Sundresh quashed the provisions of the Consumer Protection Rules, 2020, framed by the Central government under Section 101 of the Consumer Protection Act 2019.
  • As per the Consumer Protection Rules, 2020 framed by the Union of India, lawyers having minimum professional experience of 20 years and 15 years were eligible for adjudication as members to the State Consumer Commissions and District Forums, respectively, after qualifying a written examination.

Supreme Court Collegium Recommends 7 Names for Appointment as Gujarat High Court Judges

  • The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud recommended the names of five judicial officers and two advocates for appointment as judges in the Gujarat High Court.
  • The Collegium, which also comprised Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and K. M. Joseph, resolved to recommend the names of judicial officers Susan Valentine Pinto, Hasmukhbhai Dalsukhbhai Suthar, Jitendra Champaklal Doshi, Mangesh Rameshchandra Mengdey, and Divyeshkumar Amrutlal Joshi and advocates Devan Mahendrabhai Desai and Moxa Kiran Thakker.

CJI Chandrachud Rebukes SCBA Chief over Listing of Plea Related to Supreme Court Land

  • Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud came down heavily on President of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Vikas Singh for repeated insistence on listing of the petition that sought a direction to the Ministry of Urban Development to convert the entire land measuring 1.33 acres that was allotted to the Supreme Court into chamber blocks for lawyers.
  • Senior Advocate Singh repeatedly insisted on urgent listing of the plea before a Bench led by the CJI, contending that the matter had not been listed for six previous hearings.
  • The CJI told Singh that it would be listed in the ordinary course, however, the SCBA chief threatened to escalate the matter and even suggested visiting the residence of the CJI over the same.
  • Justice Chandrachud ordered Singh to leave the court immediately.

Supreme Court Order: Election Commissioners to be Appointed on Advice of Committee

  • The Supreme Court ruled that Election Commissioners will now be appointed by the President of India on the advice of a Committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha (or leader of the largest opposition party), and the Chief Justice of India.
  • The landmark judgment, which will change the way elections are held in India, was passed by the Constitution Bench of Justice K. M. Joseph, Justice Ajay Rastogi, Justice Aniruddha Bose, Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice C. T. Ravikumar on a batch of petitions seeking reforms in the process of appointment of members of the Election Commission of India.

Hindenburg-Adani issue: Supreme Court Constitutes 6-member Committee to Review Regulatory Mechanism

  • The Supreme Court set up an expert committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge, Justice Abhay Mohan Sapre, to review the regulatory mechanism and suggest ways to protect the Indian investors from incidents such as the Hindenburg-Adani issue in future.
  • The Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice J.B. Pardiwala appointed the following persons as the members of the committee: TATA Steel Chairman Om Prakash Bhatt, retired judge Justice J. P. Devdatt, non-executive Chairman of Infosy Nandan Nilakeni, Prasar Bharti Chairman K. V. Kamath and Advocate Somasekharan Sundaresan.
  • The Apex Court further directed the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to investigate the allegations in the Hindenburg Research report against the Adani group of companies.
