Gujarat’s Pithora painting receives GI tag

Gujarat’s Pithora painting received a Geographical Indication tag in July 2026, recognizing its distinctive cultural heritage. The traditional tribal wall art is mainly associated with the Rathwa community and is widely practised in the Panchmahal and Chhota Udaipur districts of Gujarat. The paintings depict Pithora De, a tribal deity linked with prosperity, marriage, and well-being, and are created on walls and courtyards of homes, often with ritual significance. The GI status is expected to boost livelihoods for rural artisans through tourism, local marketing, and better protection against imitation. State cultural departments say the recognition will help preserve motifs, color schemes, and storytelling traditions for future generations.

Dhimsa dance enters Guinness World Records in Andhra Pradesh

A large-scale Dhimsa dance performance earned a place in the Guinness World Records during August 2026 at Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Andhra Pradesh. The event drew participation from around 13,000 tribal schoolgirls, showcasing the Dhimsa, a traditional folk dance of the Araku Valley region. Organisers said the world-record attempt aimed to celebrate indigenous culture, strengthen community pride, and inspire youth in rural areas. Viveka Smaraka inaugurated in Mysuru to promote youth values

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre in Mysuru, named Viveka Smaraka, in August 2026. The centre aims to promote the ideals of nation-building, service and character development among young people. Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar attended the ceremony. The facility will host programs on education, arts, and community service, offering spaces for youth conferences, cultural events, and mentorship. Chennai Hosts 15th Vastra Utsav 2026

Chennai hosted the 15th Vastra Utsav on 31 July and 1 August 2026, at Sri Kuchalambal Kalyana Mahal in Chetpet. The two-day event showcased traditional handloom textiles from Tamil Nadu, along with indigenous crafts and sustainable fashion products. Artisans demonstrated weaving techniques, dyeing practices, and block printing, drawing buyers and visitors from across the region. The exhibition connected rural weavers with urban markets and promoted heritage crafts in modern design. Proceeds supported the DakshinaChitra Museum’s heritage and educational programmes, sustaining artisan livelihoods and cultural preservation. The festival highlighted India’s textile heritage while encouraging contemporary, eco-friendly design practices.

UNESCO World Heritage Committee adds Mount Olympus and D-Day Beaches to List

During the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, in July 2026, Mount Olympus in Greece and the D-Day Landing Beaches in northern France were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The committee evaluates sites of outstanding universal value and approves additions based on preservation requirements and management plans. The two new entries highlight the global importance of protecting natural landscapes and historic memory. The session, attended by delegations from member countries, emphasised safeguarding heritage for future generations and promoting responsible tourism. Sarnath Inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List

The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2026 during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea. The designation makes Sarnath India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sarnath is revered as the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. The inscription is expected to boost conservation efforts and tourism, while highlighting India’s centuries-old religious and cultural heritage. Authorities plan enhanced preservation and accessibility measures to accommodate growing visitor numbers and scholarly interest.

Museum of Word opens at National Library in Kolkata

India's first immersive language museum, the Museum of Word (Shabdalok), was inaugurated at the National Library in Kolkata in July 2026. Developed by the National Library under the Union Ministry of Culture, the museum uses interactive exhibits to showcase India's linguistic heritage. It features nine galleries tracing the evolution of languages, scripts, and literature from oral traditions and ancient manuscripts to modern digital texts. The museum celebrates India's 22 official languages and highlights language's role in identity, education, and culture. Visitors can explore scripts such as Devanagari, Bengali, and Tamil through sensory displays and augmented reality experiences.
