IIT Guwahati, Bombay, European Partners Building Sensor to Check Indian Water Quality

  • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati and Bombay in collaboration with European universities are working towards building a low-cost technology to check the quality of potable and other water in India.
  • The LOTUS Indo-European project, an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and the European Commission, is aimed at providing solutions for issues related to the quality of water supplied across Indian households and elsewhere.
  • A core element of the LOTUS project is a novel water quality sensor that builds on previous work done at Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, France.
  • The sensor was further developed during the project by researchers at Université Gustave Eiffel in collaboration with IIT Guwahati and the SME EGM, Sophia Antipolis, France.
  • "The LOTUS sensor developed at IIT Guwahati is being designed to address sensing needs and quality control aspects across different use case scenarios encompassing safe drinking water, agricultural water and wastewater.

UP Govt. Inaugurated 'E-Sushrut' HMIS in UP Medical Colleges

  • The Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak and Minister of State for Medical Education Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh inaugurated the 'E-Sushrut' Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) in 22 state medical colleges. The initiative was launched by the state medical education department in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC).
  • The software will help in the patient registration, admission, discharge, ambulance, food, medicines, and make available the details of doctors online. Through this system the availability of doctors in the hospital can also be easily ascertained and patients will be able to pay the fee through online and net banking. Hospital management information system has been implemented in Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Agra, Meerut, King George Medical University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Science Saifai, GIMS Greater Noida, Lohia Institute, Sanjay Gandhi PGI, and Mirzapur Medical College.

IOCL Embarks on TB Elimination Project in UP, Chhattisgarh

  • The Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as part of its corporate social responsibility with the Central TB Division (CTD) under the Ministry of Health, and the states of Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to undertake intensified TB elimination project.
  • Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh share the highest burden of TB cases among large states in India.
  • The MoU was signed in presence of Union Minister of Health Mansukh Mandaviya and Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri.

Dharmadam First Complete Library Constituency in India

  • Dharmadam, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's constituency achieved the position of complete library constituency in India, the first in India.
  • As per Vijayan, out of the total 138 wards in the constituency, there were no libraries in 63 wards. Dharmadam reached the achievement with the opening of libraries in these wards too.
  • Kerala which was the first state to achieve 100% literacy status in India is also the only state in India that has a library in every village.
  • Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker of Kerala is also known as the Father of the Library Movement in India. He started Granthashala Sangam with about 50 small libraries in 1945 in Kerala which grew into a large network of thousands of libraries.

IIM-Bangalore Re-appoints Devi Shetty as Chairman of Board of Governors

  • The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIM-B) appointed Devi Prasad Shetty as its new chairman of the Board of Governors. Shetty was appointed for the second time.
  • This decision was taken by the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore at a special meeting held upon the recommendation of the search-cum-selection committee. Devi Prasad Shetty, Chairman and Senior Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Narayana Group of Hospitals, was elected for a second term of four years.

IIT Ropar Partners with Start-up GUVI for Excellence in E-learning Services

  • Indian Institute of Technology Ropar partnered with IIT Madras and IIM Ahmedabad-incubated edtech Start-up GUVI for new initiatives to drive excellence in e-learning services. The GUVI will collaborate on research to upgrade its placement-oriented career program - 'ZEN Class' and Mentorship, by meeting the standards of excellence in e-learning services through IIT Ropar.
  • GUVI is an IIT Madras and IIM Ahmedabad incubated edtech startup that empowers career aspirants for IT and software jobs through self-paced learning tech courses, ZEN class career programs, and other vernacular edtech services. GUVI, which offers an online platform for students to learn in their mother tongues, offers specialised information technology courses to upskill students and make them 'job ready' online.

South Korea Registers First Death Linked to 'Brain-Eating Amoeba'

  • A rare and potentially deadly brain-eating amoeba was identified in South Korea for the first time. The brain-eating amoeba, known as naegleria fowleri, is typically found in warm freshwater and soil, and can cause a rare and severe infection known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).
  • According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the infected individual in his 50s has died. The man had come back to Korea after a four month trip in Thailand. Although human to human transmission of the infection is not possible, the KDCA has advised people to avoid water activities in freshwater lakes and to take precautions when engaging in water sports.
  • The first report identifying this infection was published in 1965 in Australia. The report identified three fatal infections from 1965 and one from 1961.

  • The MCD is looking for support from NGOs and private firms for development of smart classes, libraries, and improvement of school buildings.
  • The Municipal Corporation of Delhi started 'Vidyasthali Project' to develop a superlative learning environment in its schools for an all-round development of students.
  • Under the project, various NGOs and private companies are invited to support and strengthen facilities and infrastructure in the civic body-run schools.

IIT Madras' Courses Win Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) won key recognition in Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards, which is often referred to as 'the Oscars of Education.'
  • This time, IIT madras' BS in Data Science and Applications won a silver prize in the 'Best Online Program' category. Additionally, NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning), a joint initiative of IITs and IISc, won the gold in the 'Lifelong Learning category.'
  • The IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications was awarded the best online degree programme for providing a hybrid mode of teaching/learning facilities, utilising multimedia and a combination of electronic and traditional educational models.
