Maharashtra Govt. Approves Scheme for Schools with Less than 20 Students to be Merged to Create C...

The Maharashtra government approved a new scheme of creating clusters of schools by merging multiple schools having enrolment of less than 20 students.
The idea is to combine them and create one big school wherein appropriate infrastructural can be provided to students along with a nurturing atmosphere with a great number of children in one campus encouraging healthy competition, sportsmanship and other aspects of holistic development of children.

UP Government's New Uniform Mandate for Schools to Combat Communicable Diseases

In a proactive move to curb the spread of communicable diseases such as Dengue, Malaria, and Chikungunya, the Uttar Pradesh government introduced new guidelines for schools across the state. Effective immediately, students attending council schools in Uttar Pradesh are required to wear full shirts and trousers as part of their school uniforms.
To enforce this directive, a circular has been dispatched to the basic education officers in all districts, instructing them to ensure compliance within their respective districts.
Additionally, each school will appoint a designated teacher as a nodal officer to oversee the implementation of this new uniform policy.
The decision to implement a dress code modification comes amid a rise in cases of communicable diseases in the state, particularly Dengue, Chikungunya, and Malaria.

India's First 'Medical Cobotics Centre' at IIIT Delhi

iHub Anubhuti-IIITD Foundation (Technology Innovation Hub of IIIT-Delhi) and iHub Foundation for Cobotics (IHFC, Technology Innovation Hub of IIT Delhi) inaugurated their joint medical facility, 'MCC-Medical Cobotics Centre' on the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, IIT Delhi campus.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Government of India, funded this joint facility to be operated by iHub Anubhuti and IHFC under the NMICPS mission.
The Medical Cobotics Centre is aimed at being India's first state-of-the-art technology-enabled medical simulation and training facility for doctors, paramedics, technicians, engineers, biomedical researchers, and entrepreneurs. The Centre is also equipped to offer hands-on simulation training to the medical fraternity across the country.

QS Releases its First 'Europe 2024' Ranking; 7 of Top 10 Top Universities Based in UK

Seven of the top ten universities in Europe are based in the United Kingdom, as per the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking 2024. QS for the first time released rankings focused exclusively on European universities. A total of 688 universities were included in the list with the University of Oxford grabbing the first place, closely followed by ETH Zurich.
The third spot was awarded to the University of Cambridge (with an overall score of 98.7), followed by Imperial College London (with an overall score of 97.6) and UCL at fifth spot (with an overall score of 97.5).

Discussions to Setup IIT Campus in UK Underway

As per reports, the UK is keen on welcoming an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to set up an offshore campus in the country and some UK universities are already in talks with IITs to explore the possibility.
Several universities from the UK are also interested in setting up their branch campuses in India and are waiting for final regulatory framework from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to move formally in this regard.

Usha Tandon First Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University Prayagraj

Senior academician and a well-known name in the field of legal studies and research professor Usha Tandon was appointed as the first vice-chancellor of Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University (NLU), Prayagraj. She is currently a senior professor in the faculty of law at the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, where she is dean (faculty of law) and teaches environmental law, population law, gender justice and family law.
Prof Tandon has over 30 years of teaching experience and she is recognised for her research in the areas of human development, with a particular emphasis on environmental protection and women empowerment.
She has also authored and edited several books on various aspects of the law relating to environmental protection and women rights.

CLAT can be Conducted in Regional Languages

The National Testing Agency, NTA, told the Delhi High Court that it can conduct the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) in regional languages such as Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, and others. NTA filed an affidavit and conveyed its stand in response to a petition seeking the conduct of CLAT-2024 not only in English but also in regional languages.
A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad asked NTA to file an affidavit on the issue, observing that when entrance examinations for medical and engineering courses can be held in regional languages, why not CLAT, which is conducted only in English?
On the same, NTA informed the court that it has a pool of experts and translators for preparing question papers in multiple languages, and if it has to conduct the upcoming test in regional languages, it could possibly be held sometime in the third or fourth week of January 2024, considering the minimum time of four months required for the preparation.

Health Ministry Reduces NEET PG Cut-off to Zero Percentile for this Year

The Union health ministry decided to reduce the qualifying percentile for leftover postgraduate (PG) seats in medical colleges to zero, a move that the Indian Medical Association (IMA) hailed but others in the medical profession have characterised as bizarre.
In other words, this means that all candidates who appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (PG), 2023, are now eligible for admission to seats that may still be available in MD/MS courses following two rounds of counselling, as there are no minimum qualifying marks.
In response to the order, the IMA — the largest network of doctors in India — issued a statement thanking the health minister and saying it had requested the government to do this.
Before this, the cut-off percentile for admission to PG seats during the first two rounds of counselling had been 50 for the unreserved category, 45 for the PwD (persons with disabilities) category and 40 for reserved-category students.

Economist Shankar Acharya New Chancellor of AP Central University

Veteran economist and former chief economic advisor to the government of India, Shankar Acharya, was appointed as the chancellor of Andhra Pradesh Central University.
Previously, Acharya worked as an economic advisor in the ministry of finance. He also served as India's longest-serving Chief Economic Advisor (CEA), who advised three successive finance ministers: Manmohan Singh, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha for eight years between 1993 and 2001.
During the latter part of his tenure as the CEA, Acharya also served as a member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
He has also worked in the World Bank, where he led the team for the World Development Report 1979 and then served as a research advisor to the bank. Since 2001, Acharya has been an Honorary Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

British Council Announces 12 New Academic Grants

The British Council announced 12 new academic grants and two new top-up grants worth £500k for industry-academia partnerships across India and the UK. It is a part of the British Council's Going Global Partnership (GGP) programme.
The announcement was made at the India-UK Higher Education Conference in Delhi. Out of all the new grants most of them are collaborating with technological institutions.

Bihar to Recruit over 69,000 Teachers in Schools, Cabinet Gives Nod

The Bihar cabinet approved the recruitment of 69,692 teachers in state-run schools.
The cabinet also gave approval for a 100 per cent hike in the monthly honorarium of 'Siksha Sewaks' and Vikas Mitras'. Around 9,825 Vikas Mitras working under the SC and ST Welfare Department in the state's panchayats will now get a monthly honorarium of over Rs. 25,000 as against the existing Rs. 13,700, and an annual increment of 5 per cent every year.
'Vikas Mitras' work on the implementation of various developmental and welfare schemes by the government in rural areas.
After the increase in the honorarium for 'Shiksha Sewaks', they will get Rs. 22,000 as against Rs. 11,000 per month, besides an annual increment of 5 per cent.
