Bengal Governor Removes Jadavpur University Officiating VC on Disciplinary Grounds

  • West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose, who is also the chancellor of all state-run universities, removed Jadavpur University officiating Vice Chancellor Buddhadeb Sau on disciplinary grounds.
  • Bose has also constituted an enquiry committee to probe several complaints received against the interim VC.
  • Mathematics professor Sau was named as the JU's officiating VC in August 2023.

BHU to Establish Four New Scholarships for Chemistry and Law Students

  • The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is establishing four new scholarships for the students of Chemistry and Law at the varsity. These scholarships are being instituted as the university received a donation of Rs. 20 lakh under the Pratidana initiative to establish these scholarships, slated to be awarded from the academic session 2024-25.
  • This donation was made by Madan Mohan Kayastha and his wife Santosh Kayastha in memory of their parents. Kayastha is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University and had earned his M.Tech. in Industrial Chemistry in the year 1951.

IIT Guwahati Researchers Develop Model to Understand Water Flow in Braided Rivers

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) in collaboration with the Brahmaputra Board, under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, developed a model to understand the flow of water in large braided rivers. The initiative is aimed at providing valuable insights to engineers to design sustainable structures for river bank protection measures.
  • The model - BRAHMA-2D (Braided River Aid: Hydro-Morphological Analyser) - was successfully validated on the Brahmaputra River near Majuli Island, the second-largest freshwater river island in the world and prone to river bank erosion.

Mumbai University Partners with Oxford CHS for Temple Management Course

  • Mumbai University signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies for a specialised course on temple management. This initiative is part of a broader effort to diversify the university's offerings, featuring a range of diploma and certificate-level courses, both in traditional classroom settings and online platforms.
  • This newly established course provides a comprehensive exploration of Hindu philosophy, with a curriculum encompassing degree and certificate programmes.
  • The strategic partnership aims to enrich academic offerings and promote a deeper understanding of temple management within the framework of Hindu studies.

IITs Lead the Way in Bachelor of Data Science Courses

  • When it comes to Bachelor of Data Science courses, IITs dominate the space. As per a edtech platform Imarticus Learning's Report 2023, IITs secured the top three positions among 100 colleges across India in the Bachelor of Data Science degree category.
  • Additionally, IIM Calcutta, in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur and ISI Kolkata, secured the top position among 151 institutes in the Master's in Data Science category.
  • In the Bachelor's degree category, IITs lead the way with IIT Hyderabad taking the top rank, closely followed by IIT Delhi. Notably, IIT Guwahati is the third-best educational institute for the Bachelor's Data Science programme.

IIM Kashipur Launches Executive PG Certificate Programme in Rail Management

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kashipur launched an executive post graduate certificate programme in Rail Management. This certificate course has been launched in collaboration with Zenith Railway Academy.
  • To be eligible for this programme, candidates should have cleared a degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50 per cent marks and at least two years of professional experience.

Over 4,100 Teachers Join Government Schools in Odisha

  • A total of 4,166 teachers joined government secondary schools in Odisha during a programme at the Kalinga Stadium. The 'Nijukti Parba' (appointment meet) held at the stadium marked the induction of teachers into their roles.
  • Addressing the occasion, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik emphasised that the role of teachers extends beyond creating good students to shaping good human beings.
  • Additionally, the Chief Minister announced the launch of the Rs. 138-crore 'Chief Minister's Education Award' scheme in Odisha. These awards will recognise and honour the contributions of teachers, students, government schools, village panchayats, school management committees, and district and block-level education officials.

WHO Officially Recognises Noma as a Neglected Tropical Disease

  • In a pivotal move towards addressing one of the world's most under recognised health challenges, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the inclusion of 'noma' (cancrum oris or gangrenous stomatitis) in its official list of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). This decision, which was recommended by the 17th meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Neglected Tropical Diseases (STAG-NTD), underscored WHO's commitment to expanding health services to the world's most vulnerable populations.
  • Noma, a severe gangrenous disease of the mouth and face, primarily affects malnourished young children (between the ages of 2 and 6 years) in regions of extreme poverty. It starts as an inflammation of the gums, which, if not treated early, spreads quickly to destroy facial tissues and bones. It frequently leads to death, with survivors suffering severe disfigurement.

IIT Madras Launches 7 Free Online Courses in Sports Science, No JEE Score Required

  • The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) announced the launch of seven new online courses on Sports Science. The courses can be taken online free of cost, as per the IIT.
  • These comprehensive online courses aim to bridge the gap between theory and practical applications. The courses are tailored to the Indian and South Asian body structure and cultural aspects.
