Vinod Kumar Shukla Wins PEN/Nabokov Lifetime Achievement Award 2023

  • Acclaimed Hindi writer Vinod Kumar Shukla won the 2023 PEN/Nabokov Award for achievement in international literature, PEN America is one of the most prestigious literary prizes worldwide.
  • The short story writer, poet and essayist, Shukla, who is considered one of the greatest contemporary writers in the Hindi language, received the 59th Annual PEN Literary Award on March 2 at The Town Hall in New York.
  • The PEN/Nabokov award is conferred annually to a living author whose body of work is of enduring originality and consummate craftsmanship.
  • Previous winners have included Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Anne Carson, M. NourbeSe Philip, Sandra Cisneros, Edna O'Brien, and Adonis.

India Wins GSMA Government Leadership Award 2023

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visionary leadership got global recognition. GSM Association (GSMA) conferred Government Leadership Award 2023 to India for implementing best practices in telecom policy and regulation. India was declared winner in the ceremony held at Mobile World Congress Barcelona, Spain.
  • GSMA Government Leadership Award: it is given by GSM Association (GSMA) for implementing best practices in telecom policy and regulation. GSMA Government Leadership Award 2023 is also important for UPSC Prelims Exam 2023 and UPSC Mains Exam (GS Paper 2- Various government policies and programs for various development of different sectors of the country).
  • Mobile World Congress (MWC) is an annual trade show and conference for the mobile telecommunications industry. The Mobile World Congress (MWC) event attracts representatives from mobile operators, device manufacturers, technology providers, and other players in the mobile industry.

MIT Professor Hari Balakrishnan Wins 2023 Marconi Prize

  • Computer scientist Hari Balakrishnan was awarded the 2023 Marconi Prize. Balakrishnan is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
  • The Marconi Prize is a top honour for computer scientists and is awarded by the U.S. based Marconi Foundation. It is given to those who have made a significant contribution to increasing digital inclusivity through advanced information and communications technology.
  • Balakrishnan is cited "for fundamental contributions to wired and wireless networking, mobile sensing, and distributed systems".
  • Balakrishnan has previously won the Infosys Prize (2020) and the IEEE Koji Kobayashi Computers and Communications Award (2021).
  • Previous winners of the Marconi Prize include Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Google cofounder Sergey Brin, and sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke.

Navy Chief Awarded On-The-Spot Unit Citation INS Nireekshak for Salvage Operation

  • The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Adm R. Harikumar visited INS Nireekshak at Kochi where he interacted with the diving team of the ship involved in the salvage operations at a depth of 219 meters in the Arabian Sea. He commended the ship on the safe and successful conduct of the operations under the most challenging circumstances. This is the deepest salvage carried out in the country's waters.
  • The CNS awarded the ship an 'on the spot' Unit Citation, a first in Indian Navy. He also awarded commendations to the crew involved in the salvage ops.
  • INS Nireekshak is a Dive Support and Submarine Rescue Vessel of the Indian Navy. Built by Mazgaon Shipbuilders in 1985, the ship has been in service with the Navy since 1989.

EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2022 Award Goes to Sajjan Jindal

  • Sajjan Jindal, Chairman and Managing Director of the JSW Group, was declared the EY Entrepreneur of the year 2022. A seven-member jury led by K. V. Kamath, former Chairman of ICICI Bank, adjudged Jindal as the winner for his exceptional entrepreneurial journey in scaling the global conglomerate with presence in steel, cement, infrastructure, energy, and paints to a revenue of $22 billion globally; employing over 40,000 people.
  • Jindal will represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award at Monte Carlo in June.
