International Lefthanders Day

  • International Left Handers Day is an international day observed annually on August 13 to celebrate the uniqueness and differences of left-handed individuals. The day was first observed in 1976 by Dean R. Campbell, founder of Lefthanders International, Inc.
  • International Lefthanders Day was created to celebrate sinistrality and raise awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed in a predominantly right-handed world.
  • Notably, left-handedness is said to be more common among men than among women.
  • Among the notable lefties are Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, Prince William, Mother Teresa, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actors Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth, and industrialist Ratan Tata.
  • Scientist Sir Isaac Newton, painter Pablo Picasso, French leader Napoleon Bonaparte, and media personality Oprah Winfrey are also left-handed.

World Organ Donation

  • World Organ Donation Day is marked on August 13. The day, as the name suggests, is for raising and creating awareness about organ donation. Many people across the globe have certain apprehensions and misconceptions about the process of organ donation while some are unaware about the huge difference it can make in people's lives. By definition, organ donation means donating organs that are in healthy condition after a person is dead. Organs such as lungs, kidney, eyes, liver and pancreas can turn out to be life saving for people who are going through chronic illness.
  • The first-ever organ donation was done in 1954 when Ronald Lee Herrick donated a kidney to his identical twin brother. Doctor Joseph Murray conducted the procedure for which he has also won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1990 for advances in organ transplantation.

International Youth Day

  • International Youth Day is observed every year on August 12 to highlight the myriad issues faced by young people across the world. The day also highlights the role of youth in matters like education, sustainable development, global peace, social justice and inclusiveness.
  • Young people, who attended the first session of the UN's World Youth Forum in Vienna, Austria, in 1991, suggested that an International Youth Day be declared to help raise money for the United Nations Youth Fund. At the first session of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth, held in Lisbon in August 1998, August 12 was declared International Youth Day. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) endorsed this proclamation in 1999.
  • The theme for 2022's edition of International Youth Day was "Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages." Cooperation and harmony between the youth and older generations is necessary to achieve sustainable development goals, as per Agenda 2030 of the United Nations (UN).

World Biofuel Day

  • World Biofuel Day is celebrated annually on August 10 to highlight the importance of biofuels, which are produced from animal waste, algae, and industrial and agricultural waste. Biofuels, unlike fossil fuels, are produced in a short amount of time and are liquid or gaseous. They are environment friendly, sustainable, renewable and biodegradable.
  • August 10 was chosen as World Biofuel Day since it was on this date in 1893 that German inventor Sir Rudolf Diesel successfully ran his diesel engine on peanut oil. This was a path-breaking discovery as it created a safer, renewable and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
  • In India, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoP&NG) and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) started celebrating World Biofuel Day, 2015 onwards.
  • The theme World Biofuel Day 2022 was 'Biofuels for Sustainability and Rural Income'.
