Madhavan New President of FTII Society

  • R. Madhavan was appointed as the new President of the Film & Television Institute of India. The actor replaced filmmaker Shekhar Kapur in the position.
  • Information & Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced that Madhavan was appointed as the new FTII President.
  • FTII, situated in Pune, Maharashtra, falls under the purview of the Central Government's Information & Broadcasting Ministry. Established in 1960, the institute offers courses in film editing, direction cinematography, audiography, acting, art direction, and computer graphics and animation.
  • Shekhar Kapur was the last FTII President. Actor Roshan Taneja was the first one, followed by the likes of cartoonist R. K. Laxman, filmmakers Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mahesh Bhatt, B. P. Singh, Saeed Akhtar Mirza, actors Girish Karnad, Vinod Khanna, Gajendra Chauhan, Anupam Kher, and screenwriter U. R. Ananthamurthy.

'Judega Bharat, Jeetega INDIA': Opposition Alliance's Theme for 2024 Lok Sabha Polls

  • The Opposition bloc INDIA set up a 14-member coordination committee to steer the campaign to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2024 general elections.
  • The 28 Opposition parties came together in July to announce their coalition named Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
  • Besides the formation of coordination committee, two major decisions to (i) organise public rallies at the earliest in different parts of the country and (ii) coordinate communication and media strategies of parties in the bloc on the theme of 'Judega Bharat, Jeetega INDIA' were taken.

Fourth G20 Summit Sherpa Meeting Kicks off in Haryana's Nuh

  • The fourth and final G20 Sherpa meeting commenced in Haryana's Nuh district. The meeting will be held till the 7th of September near Tauru.
  • Apart from the G20 member countries, sherpas and other delegates from the invited countries are participating in the high-level meeting. For the convenience of the participants, 23 liaison officers -- 19 HCS and four IAS officers -- have been deputed with them.

Jyotiraditya Scindia Inaugurates Utkela Airport

  • Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya M. Scindia inaugurated Utkela Airport in Odisha, which has been developed as a regional airport under the UDAN scheme at a cost of Rs. 31.07 crore.
  • The Utkela-Bhubaneswar-Utkela flight route is set to improve regional air connectivity, playing a pivotal role in fostering economic growth within the area.
  • Utkela airport has a runway of length 917 meters (2,995 ft.) with a width of 30 meters.

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Chouhan Allocates Portfolios to 3 New Ministers

  • Days after expanding his cabinet, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan allocated portfolios to the three new ministers.
  • Newly inducted minister Rajendra Shukla was given the Public Health Engineering (PHE) and Public Relations departments.
  • Gauri Shankar Bisen got the Narmada Valley Development department, while Rahul Lodhi was allocated Kutir and Gramodyog and Forest departments.
  • With the induction of three more ministers, the cabinet's strength has risen to 34, with only one vacancy is left in the cabinet.

Government Calls Parliament Special Session

  • The government called for a special session of Parliament to be held from September 18 to 22, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi informed, adding, that there will be five sittings.
  • There is speculation the special session is being called to begin the process of shifting from the old to the new Parliament building. So, this session may begin in the old and end in the new.

Nagaland Becomes First State in North Eastern Region to Initiate Aadhaar Linked Birth Registration

  • Nagaland became the first among the eight States in the northeast to start Aadhaar-lined birth registration, or ALBR.
  • The initiative, launched in the state's capital Kohima, facilitates birth registration–based Aadhaar enrolment for children up to five years of age.
  • Col. Abhishek Koushik, the Director of UIDAI, lauded the Nagaland government for becoming the first northeastern State to implement ALBR.
  • One of the paramount benefits of the ALBR system is the conferment of a unique identity upon infants. This unique identity not only ensures proper tracking of essential services such as immunization, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), education, and various social welfare provisions but also brings ease and efficiency to parents and concerned departments alike.

Govt. Appoints Jaya Verma Sinha as first woman CEO, Chairperson of Railway Board

  • The Centre appointed Jaya Verma Sinha as the first woman chairperson and CEO of the Railway Board.
  • Sinha has served at least 35 years at the Indian Railways.
  • She will be incharge of the top post of the Railways till 31 December, 2024.
  • An Alumnus of the Allahabad University, Sinha joined the Indian Railway Traffic Service in 1988 and worked in Northern Railway, South-East Railway and Eastern Railway.

Centre Launches 'Awareness Campaign and Training of Trainers' Initiative

  • Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda, inaugurated the 'Awareness Campaign and Training of Trainers' initiative to educate grassroots workers and enable them to raise awareness about sickle cell anaemia, particularly in tribal regions. Announced in the 2023-24 budget, the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission targets the eradication of the disease by 2047.
  • The comprehensive strategy involves public awareness campaigns, the screening of seven crore individuals aged 0-40 in affected tribal areas, and counselling. This collaborative effort will unite central ministries and state governments.

Ex-President Ram Nath Kovind-headed Committee to Explore Possibility of 'One-nation, One-election'

  • The government constituted a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind to explore the possibility of 'one nation, one election'.
  • The move came a day after the government called a special session of Parliament between September 18 and 22, the agenda for which is under wraps.
  • Over the years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed strongly for the idea of simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly polls, and the decision to task Kovind to look into it underscores the government's seriousness as a host of elections approach.
  • Assembly polls are due in five states in November-December and they will be followed by the Lok Sabha elections in May-June next year.

Gujarat Government Hikes Reservations for OBCs to 27% in Panchayats and ULBs

  • The Gujarat government hiked reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from the existing 10% to 27% in the panchayats and urban local bodies.
  • The announcement of quotas paves the way for elections for 7000 village panchayats, two district panchayats and 70 municipalities.
  • The population of the OBCs in the State is about 52%.

India Lodges Strong Protest with China over New Map

  • India lodged a strong protest with China over the publication of a new map that was released by the Chinese government on August 28, showing all of Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin, and other parts of Indian territory within its borders, that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called absurd claims. The map, that has in the past claimed Indian territories as well, was published just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and discussed resolving the boundary situation.

India, New Zealand Sign MoU to Boost Cooperation in Civil Aviation

  • India and New Zealand signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation in civil aviation. This will cover the scheduling of new routes, codeshare services, traffic rights, and capacity entitlement. The MoU was signed by Civil Aviation Secretary, Rajiv Bansal and the New Zealand High Commissioner David Pine in New Delhi.
  • On the occasion, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Minister for Trade and Export Growth Damien O'Connor of New Zealand were also present.
  • According to the MoU, the designated airlines of New Zealand may operate any number of services with any type of aircraft, with third and fourth freedom traffic rights to and from six points in India, namely New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. NITI Aayog, UNDP Join Hands to Fast-track Sustainable Development Goals

  • Central think tank NITI Aayog and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a memorandum of understanding to formalise a cooperative framework to fast-track India's pursuit to achieve its sustainable development goals (SDGs).
  • The memorandum of understanding will focus on the two organisations' cooperation on a range of areas, including SDG localisation, data-driven monitoring, Aspirational Districts and Blocks, among others.
