Dhankhar Reconstitutes Panel of Vice-chairpersons with 50% Women MPs

  • Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar reconstituted the panel of vice-chairpersons comprising eight members with the presence of 50 per cent women parliamentarians.
  • The eight-member panel now has four women members- Congress MP Phulo Devi Netam, and Bharatiya Janata Party's MPs Phangnon Konyak, Darshana Singh and Sonal Mansingh.
  • Dhankhar made the announcement regarding the reconstituted panel in the Upper House on the first day of the Winter Session of the Parliament.
  • The vice chairpersons are eligible to preside over the house in the absence of the chairman or the deputy chairman.

Kanchan Devi First Woman Director General of ICFRE

  • Kanchan Devi, 1991-batch Indian Forest Service Officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Indian Council of Forestry Research Education (ICFRE). This marked a historic milestone, as Kanchan became the first woman officer to ascend to this esteemed position within the premier council operating under the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.
  • Kanchan Devi brings to her new role an impressive track record of over 30 years in the realm of forestry. Her extensive expertise spans a myriad of aspects, including forest management, administration, education, human resource development, research, and extension.
  • ICFRE was created in 1986, under the Central Ministry of Environment and Forests (India), to direct and manage research and education in forestry sector in India. ICFRE is headed by a Director General with headquarters at Dehradun. ICFRE became an autonomous council under the Ministry in 1991.
  • ICFRE is the largest organisation responsible for forestry research in India.

R. K. Singh Inaugurates National Conference on 'Energy Transition in India'

  • Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy R. K. Singh inaugurated a two-day National Conference on 'Energy Transition in India - Road Travelled and Opportunities Ahead' in Gandhinagar. Kanubhai Desai, Minister of Energy Petrochemicals and Finance, Government of Gujarat was also present along with other dignitaries on the occasion. Organised as a part of the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, the event was attended by more than 250 Indian and foreign representatives of power and renewable energy sector. The two-day conference focused on scaling up renewable energy, generation and consumption by considering challenges related to grid integration, financing tools and developing supporting infrastructure.

Chhattisgarh Election Results

  • The results of the Chhattisgarh assembly elections were announced with the BJP staging an upset to secure a huge majority in the state that has 90 seats. The BJP made a mockery of the exit poll that had predicted a victory for the Congress. The saffron party secured 54 seats, ruining Bhupesh Bagehl's dream of a second straight term in the state. The majority mark in the state is 46 and the BJP is in a comfortable position with 54 seats.

Rajasthan Election Result 2023: BJP Wins Big with 115 Seats

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the Rajasthan assembly polls and is set to form the government in the 200-member state Assembly, as the party crossed the majority mark by securing 115 seats.
  • As the BJP approached triumph in the Rajasthan Assembly elections, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot submitted his resignation letter to Rajasthan Governor Kalraj Mishra.

Ram Karan Yadav Takes Charge as General Manager of Central Railway

  • Senior railway official Ram Karan Yadav took charge as the General Manager of the Central Railway (CR).
  • Before joining the Central Railway, Yadav was the Director General of the Indian Railways Institute of Civil Engineering (IRICEN) Pune.
  • The senior officer replaced Naresh Lalwani.
  • Yadav graduated in civil engineering with honours from IIT Roorkee in 1985 and joined the Railways in March 1988. He also earned an M.Tech (Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering) from IIT Delhi in 1987.

Global Ayurveda Festival 2023

  • India is celebrating the 5th edition of the Global Ayurveda Festival in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated the Global Ayurveda Festival (GAF) 2023 which is taking place from December 1-5, 2023. International practitioners of alternative medicine, researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders joined the event to explore its impact on healthcare. The theme of the 5th Global Ayurveda Festival 2023 is 'Emerging Challenges in Healthcare and a Resurgent Ayurveda'.

Ministry of Textiles Hosts 81st Plenary Meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee

  • The Government of India, Ministry of Textiles is hosting the 81st Plenary Meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) in Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai from December 2 to 5, 2023 through the Office of Textile Commissioner in association with the Cotton Corporation of India Limited (CCI), the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) and the Cotton Association of India (CAI). India is hosting this event after nearly 8 years.
  • Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Textiles, Commerce & Industry and Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India inaugurating this Plenary in Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai. Over 400 delegates from 35 countries across continents consisting of Government representatives from various cotton growing and consuming countries/ regions, reputed industrialists, important business delegates, eminent scientists and researchers are participating in the 4 day long conference. This is the first in-person Plenary Meeting since 2019 due to Covid-19 pandemic. The previous event was hosted by India in 2015 with the theme 'From Farm to Fabric: The Many Faces of Cotton' focusing on value addition. Moving forward it is to take the agenda from economics to ecology. This is also the 5th time that the ICAC Plenary Meeting is being held in India in the last 6 decades.
  • The theme of this (2023) Plenary Meeting is 'Cotton Value Chain: Local Innovations for Global prosperity'. The 81st Plenary aims to serve as a platform for sharing innovations, benchmarks, good practices and experiences across the globe on productivity, climate resilience and circularity for a vibrant cotton economy. Focus is on local innovations and cutting edge technologies for sustainability developed locally but have global implications and potential for the prosperity of the cotton value chain touching the livelihoods of millions engaged in production, processing, trade, fashion and textile industry.

Jal Shakti Ministry Organises Jal Itihas Utsav in New Delhi

  • To raise public consciousness about safeguarding water heritage sites, creating a sense of ownership among the masses as well as promote tourism and restoration of such heritage structures, the Ministry of Jal Shakti organised 'Jal Itihas Utsav' at Shamsi Talab, Jahaz Mahal situated in Mehrauli, Delhi.
  • Lt. Governor of Delhi Vinai Kumar Saxena, Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat attended the event.
  • The event marked the culmination of 'Water Heritage Fortnight' celebrated in various districts across the nation from November 15, 2023 to November 30, 2023, at 75 'Natural Water Heritage Structures' and also marked the successful completion of the 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain' 2023 nationwide campaign.

Air Force Officer Manisha Padhi is India's First Woman Aide de Camp

  • Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati appointed Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi as Aide-De-Camp (ADC) from the armed forces at a brief ceremony held at the Raj Bhawan in Aizawl.
  • Padhi, a 2015 batch Indian Air Force officer, is the first Indian woman to acquire the post.
  • Her appointment is not just a milestone but a testament to the power of women breaking gender norms and excelling in different fields.
  • Padhi formally joined her post and reported to the Governor, where she was introduced to the officers and staff of the Raj Bhavan at Aizawl.
  • Before her new posting, Padhi was posted at Air Force stations in Bidar, Pune and Bhatinda.
