Sachin Pilot Gets Key Role in Congress' Major Reshuffle Ahead of Polls

  • Sachin Pilot was appointed Congress General Secretary in-charge of Chhattisgarh as the party continues its organisational overhaul with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was replaced as the party's Uttar Pradesh in charge.
  • She continues to be the party's General Secretary "without any assigned portfolio. Avinash Pandey replaced her in the state.
  • Sachin Pilot's appointment is being seen as a move to pacify the leader, who has been seeking a greater role in the party. Pilot's dissatisfaction with the party's Rajasthan leadership almost cost Congress the desert state mid-term in 2020, when the disgruntled leader, then the Deputy Chief Minister, led a coup against Ashok Gehlot.

  • Congress constituted manifesto committee for the upcoming 2024 general elections and appointed former UNION Minister, P. Chidambaram as the chairman. Former Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister T. S. Singh Deo was given the charge of Convenor of the committee.
  • The 16-member panel includes Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Former Union Ministers Anand Sharma, Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor are also part of the committee.

Chhattisgarh CM Expands Cabinet, Inducts Nine Ministers

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expanded his state cabinet with the induction of nine new ministers. Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs Brijmohan Agrawal, Ramvichar Netam, Dayaldas Baghel, Kedar Kashyap, Lakhanlal Dewangan, Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, OP Choudhary, Tank Ram Verma and Laxmi Rajwade were administered oath by Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan.
  • This took the strength of the Sai-led cabinet to 12. Before this, the cabinet had three members – Chief Minister Sai and Deputy CMs Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma.
  • Chhattisgarh can have a maximum of 13 ministers, including the CM.

JCI Launches Dedicated App for Jute Farmers

  • The Jute Corporation of India launched an app that would provide vital knowledge to farmers on various issues for optimal jute cultivation and maximisation of income.
  • Rachna Shah, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, launched the 'Paat-Mitro' app.
  • It would also feature information on jute gradation parametres, farmer-centric schemes like 'Jute-ICARE', weather forecasts and procurement policies.
  • 'Paat-Mitro' marks a significant step forward in supporting jute farmers and revitalising the industry.

French President Emmanuel Macron to be Chief Guest for 2024 Republic Day

  • French President Emmanuel Macron will be the chief guest for the 75th Republic Day celebrations to be held on January 26, 2024.
  • Macron had also visited India for the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023.
  • This year (2023), both countries are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the guest of honour at the Bastille Day Parade held on July 14, 2023, in Paris.
  • This will be the sixth time a French leader will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in the national capital.

Inaugural World Odia Language Conference

  • The Odisha government announced it will host the first-ever 'Biswa Odia Bhasha Sammilani' (World Odia Language Conference) in February 2024, to strengthen and popularise the language.
  • Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that national and international language experts as well as researchers would be invited for the three-day event.

Govt. Ropes in CISF for Security of Parliament Complex

  • The government decided to hand over comprehensive security of the Parliament building complex to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in the wake of the December 13 breach of the safety ring.
  • The CISF will render access control to the new and old Parliament complex in an airport security-like fashion where body frisking of persons will be done through hand-held detectors and their belongings will be checked through X-ray machines, with a provision to even scan shoes, heavy jackets and belts by putting them on a tray and passing them through the scanner.

Former Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar is Speaker of MP Assembly

  • Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar was unanimously elected as the speaker of the Madhya Pradesh legislative Assembly.
  • Chief Minister Mohan Yadav moved a proposal for the election of 66-year-old Tomar as the Speaker which was seconded by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar.
  • Former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also moved a proposal for the election of Tomar as the Speaker which was seconded by former Union Minister Prahlad Patel.
  • Five more proposals, including by opposition Congress MLAs Ajay Singh, Jaivardhan Singh and Rajendra Kumar Singh, were also moved in favour of Tomar.
  • After the voice vote, Pro-tem Speaker Gopal Bhargava declared Tomar as elected unanimously to the Speaker's post.

Government of India and ADB Sign 37 Billion Japanese Yen Loan for Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Tra...

  • The Government of India and Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed agreement for a 37 billion Japanese Yen ($250 million) loan that will continue financing the construction of the 82-kilometre Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor.
  • The signatories to the loan agreement were Ms. Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, for the Government of India, and Mr. Hoe Yun Jeong, Deputy Country Director, and Officer-in-Charge of the India Resident Mission, for ADB.
  • Earlier, ADB had approved a $1,049 million Multi-tranche Financing Facility (MFF) for the project in 2020 to support construction of RRTS, the first of three priority rail corridors planned under the NCR Regional Plan 2021, to connect Delhi to other cities in adjoining states. The RRTS will have multi-modal hubs to ensure smooth interchange with other transport modes. The first tranche of the ADB loan amounted to $500 million with another $500 million co-financed by AIIB.
