Department of Posts Releases Beta Version of DIGIPIN for Public Comments and Expert Opinion

  • Department of Posts is advancing an initiative to establish a standardised, geo-coded addressing system in India, for ensuring simplified addressing solutions for citizen-centric delivery of public and private services. In this regard, the Department had collaborated with IIT Hyderabad for developing a National Addressing Grid, named as Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN). This system will act as a strong and robust pillar of Geospatial Governance, leading to enhancements in public service delivery, faster emergency response and a significant boost to logistics efficiency.
  • The DIGIPIN layer will act as the addressing reference system which can be used for logically locating addresses with directional properties built into it due to the logical naming pattern followed in its construction.
  • The DIGIPIN is proposed to be fully available in the public domain and can be easily accessed by everyone. The DIGIPIN Grid system being an addressing referencing system, can be used as the base layer for other ecosystems, including various service providers and utilities, where addressing is one of the processes in the workflow.

  • After the BJP and the Congress hit out at the Pinarayi Vijayan government for appointing IAS office K. Vasuki as 'state's secretary in charge of matters concerning external cooperation', Kerala Chief Secretary, Dr. V. Venu, clarified saying the appointment was part of an effort to establish new relations for the development of the state.

India 'Reopens' Embassy in Libya after Five Years

  • After a gap of five years, India reopened its embassy in Tripoli, Libya's foreign ministry led by its Government of National Unity (GNU) announced. The development marks a significant step in enhancing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
  • The first Indian diplomat reached the country after a gap of several years. Dr. Mohd. Aleem was appointed as the Charge d'Affaires (CdA) at the reopened Indian Embassy in Tripoli, Libya. Previously, Dr. Aleem served as the Under Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) West Asia & North Africa Division (WANA).

Meghalaya Government Launches its Own OTT Platform 'Hello Meghalaya'

  • Set with an aim to promote language, the state government launched its very own OTT platform 'Hello Meghalaya', at LARITI International Center for Performing Arts and Culture.
  • Meghalaya became the second state after Kerala to launch an OTT platform to cater the youth population that intends to engage them in productive activities and enable economic growth.
  • The platform provides content ranging from Movies, Music Videos, short films and many more.
  • For film makers the platform provides up to Rs. 5 lakh per film, with additional funding for nationally or internationally acclaimed films.

PM Modi Inaugurates World Heritage Committee's 46th Session in New Delhi

  • The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi inaugurated the 46th Session of the World Heritage Committee at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The World Heritage Committee meets annually and is responsible for managing all matters on World Heritage and deciding on sites to be inscribed on the World Heritage list. India is hosting the World Heritage Committee Meeting for the first time.
  • Applauding the World Heritage Committee, the Prime Minister said that hosting this program is a matter of pride for India. He highlighted that North East India's historic Maidam has been nominated to enter UNESCO's popular World Heritage List. "This is India's 43rd World Heritage Site and North East India's first heritage to get the status of Cultural World Heritage."

NITI Aayog Releases Report on 'Electronics: Powering India's Participation in Global Value Chains'

  • NITI Aayog unveiled its report titled 'Electronics: Powering India's Participation in Global Value Chains'. This report is the outcome of extensive analysis of India's electronics sector including its scopes and challenges. The report lays down the roadmap for the country to become a global manufacturing hub in electronics manufacturing.
  • In the current scenario, 70% of international trade comprises Global Value Chain (GVC) items emphasising the critical need for India to enhance its GVC participation. This can be achieved by prioritizing sectors such as electronics, semiconductors, automobiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals, which play a significant role in the GVC landscape. Within GVCs, the electronics sector holds a significant position as nearly 80% of electronics exports come from GVCs.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy Inaugurates National Landslide Forecasting Centre

  • Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated the National Landslide Forecasting Centre (NLFC) at GSI, Dharitri Campus, Salt Lake City, Kolkata. Minister also launched the Bhusanket Web Portal and Bhooskhalan Mobile App. The programme was graced by dignitaries from various disaster management agencies and stakeholder organisations besides Director General, GSI, Janardan Prasad, and other senior officials of the organisation.
  • The NLFC is a pioneering initiative aimed at landslide hazard mitigation in India. It will in due course issue early warning bulletins for all landslide-prone states, operationalizing the regional Landslide Early Warning System (LEWS) nationwide by 2030. Equipped with advanced technology, the NLFC will provide early information to local administration and communities, update landslide inventories, and integrate real-time rainfall and slope instability data for enhanced forecasting accuracy.

"Rajiv Gandhi Civils Abhayahastam" Launched By Telangana CM

  • Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy launched a unique programme to provide financial assistance to the Civil Services aspirants from Telangana, under which the candidates who qualify for the Mains exams will be provided with Rd.1 lakh for preparation.
  • This scheme is named 'Rajiv Gandhi Civils Abhayahastam'. It will be helpful to about 400 candidates from Telangana region who qualify for the Mains every year. Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) will provide the assistance as a part of its 'Nirmaan' programme.
  • Candidates from the SC, ST, OBC, Women and the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category are eligible for the scheme but their family annual income must be below Rs. 8 lakh. The applicants must be permanent residents of Telangana.

UP Govt. Forms a State Capital Region on the Lines of NCR

  • The Uttar Pradesh government issued a notification for the formation of a State Capital Region (SCR) which would include Lucknow and five other adjoining districts along the lines of the National Capital Region (NCR) in Delhi.
  • Uttar Pradesh governor Anandiben Patel officially designated the area surrounding Lucknow as the Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region.
  • The newly formed SCR comprises the districts Lucknow, Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli and Barabanki with a total area of 27,826 square km.
  • The UP State Capital Region comprising Lucknow, Hardoi, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli and Barabanki, is formed keeping in mind the population pressure on the capital city, said chief minister Yogi Adityanath who initiated this project in September 2022.

Vinay Kwatra Appointed as India's New Ambassador to the U.S.

  • Former Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra was appointed as India's next Ambassador to the United States, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Kwatra filled the position that has been vacant since Taranjit Sandhu's retirement in January 2024.
  • Kwatra, who served as the Foreign Secretary of India from May 1, 2022, to July 14, 2024, brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to his new role. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988 and has held various significant positions throughout his career.
  • Kwatra started his career in India's Permanent Mission in Geneva and worked as a desk officer in Delhi handling UN matters.
