Maharashtra Government, British Council Partner to Boost Higher Education System
The Department of Higher and Technical Education, the Maharashtra government, in collaboration with the British Council, UK's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities, launched the Capacity Building for International Officers programme under their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
With support from the Department of Higher and Technical Education, 36 participants from 18 public and private universities across Maharashtra were shortlisted for this workshop, which is designed to strengthen internationalisation initiatives within Indian higher education institutions.
This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of Indian universities to engage in internationalisation efforts while showcasing UK expertise in this area. Aligned with the goals of India's (NEP) 2020, the programme aspires to position India as a global hub of education by fostering cross-border collaborations and promoting excellence in higher education.

India Launches First Diabetes Biobank in Chennai
India's first diabetes biobank has been established in Chennai, a collaboration between the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF). This biobank, a crucial step in advancing scientific research, will collect, process, store, and distribute biological samples to study diabetes, its causes, variations, and related disorders, contributing to global health research.
The biobank aims to facilitate advanced research into the causes of diabetes, focussing on its unique patterns in India and related health conditions. Dr. V. Mohan, chairman of MDRF, highlighted that the biobank would aid in identifying novel biomarkers for early diagnosis and developing personalised treatment strategies for diabetes. The facility houses blood samples from two major ICMR-funded studies: the ICMR-India Diabetes (ICMR-INDIAB) study and the Registry of Young-Onset Diabetes, which will provide critical data for future research.

IIT Kanpur Opens Registrations for Global Cybersecurity Hackathon
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur opened the registrations for the Global Cybersecurity Hackathon, 'Hack IITK 2024.'
The hackathon is open to cybersecurity enthusiasts, including students, aspiring start-ups, and professionals, and will be conducted in a hybrid format, with the qualification and challenge rounds held online, and the Grand Finale will take place at the IIT Kanpur campus in February 2025.
The Hack IITK 2024 is conceptualised by Cybersecurity Technology Innovation Hub (C3iHub) and powered by Techkriti. This flagship event aims to bring together cybersecurity enthusiasts from across the globe to tackle real-world cybersecurity challenges through innovation and competition.
BMW, UNICEF Join Hands to Empower Children in Rural India
The BMW Group and UNICEF announced a partnership in India with an aim to transform the educational landscape for 1 lakh children in four states. The partners would focus on foundational learning and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) skills from early years through adolescence.
The partnership will provide access to quality STEM education to adolescent girls from Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas and Tribal Ashramshalas, belonging to the most marginalised groups in hard-to-reach rural areas in Assam, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
The partnership is part of a global long-term tie-up between the BMW Group and UNICEF to reach more than 10 million children and young people each year through education and training, including learning in STEM subjects in five countries where BMW has large operations, including South Africa, Brazil, Mexico and Thailand.

IIM Kozhikode Launches 'AI for Senior Executives' Programme in India
IIM Kozhikode launched its AI for Senior Executives programme in India, in partnership with ed-tech company Emeritus with an additional course from Kellogg Executive Education.
This "in-depth and hands-on programme" is designed for a wide range of domain leaders, including senior technical product managers, chief digital officers, directors/VPs of digital transformation, technology/principal/domain consultants, founders of AI startups, and functional heads such as heads of product/marketing/strategy. It prepares them with a deep understanding of AI's transformative potential and insights to align their efforts to organisational AI goals. Through this programme, participants will hone their leadership capabilities while devising a roadmap for implementing AI in their domains effectively.

IIM Kozhikode, SAIL Sign MoU for HR Development and Research
The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) entered into a partnership with the Management Training Institute (MTI) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to enhance academic collaboration and human resource development. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalised with signatures from Sanjay Dhar, Chief General Manager of MTI-SAIL, and Lt Col Julius George (Retd.).
This partnership seeks to combine IIM Kozhikode's academic insights with SAIL's industrial expertise to develop leadership and capacity-building strategies. Prof Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, described the partnership as an effort to prepare professionals to address evolving business challenges and promote sustainable growth.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, India's first National Law University established in 1986, is all set to launch a three-year BA (Hons) programme in 2025, marking its expansion into liberal arts.
Known for revolutionising legal education with its integrated five-year BA LLB (Hons) course in 1987, the institution is now taking a bold step towards becoming a multidisciplinary university.
The new BA (Hons) programme builds on NLSIU's 35 years of expertise in the social sciences and humanities.
