Former US Fed Chair Bernanke, Two Others Win Nobel Prize in Economics

The 2022 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded to the former chair of the US Federal Reserve, Ben S Bernanke, and two US-based economists, Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig, "for research on banks and financial crises." The prize was announced by the Nobel panel at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.
The committee said that their work had shown in their research "why avoiding bank collapses is vital." Nobel Prizes carry a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly $900,000) and will be handed out on Dec. 10.
Unlike the other prizes, the economics award wasn't established in Alfred Nobel's will of 1895 but by the Swedish central bank in his memory. The first winner was selected in 1969.

Former IIM Ahmedabad Director Bakul Dholakia Honoured with Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award

Former IIM Ahmedabad and Padma Shri Bakul Dholakia was conferred with the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award by vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar for his outstanding contribution in the field of management.
The award presented by the Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management carries a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh, a memento, and a citation.
Bakul Dholakia, a stalwart in the field of finance and management, made great strides as the IIM Ahmedabad Director. Among his mentee were the likes of Harsha Bhogle and Raghuram Rajan.
He was also the director general of the International Management Institute, Delhi. Prior to joining IMI, he was the director of Adani Institute of Infrastructure Management and Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhuj.
Dholakia is a gold medalist from Baroda University and holds a doctorate in Economics. He has 47 years of professional experience, including 33 years at IIM Ahmedabad.

Ales Bialiatski, Russia's Memorial and Ukraine's CCL Win 2022 Nobel Peace Prize

Human rights advocate Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organisation Memorial, and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for Civil Liberties won the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize.
Ales Bialiatski of Belarus was one of the initiators of the democracy movement in the country in the 1980s and has devoted his life to promoting democracy and peaceful development. The human rights organisation Memorial has compiled and systematised information on political oppression and human rights violations in Russia.
Meanwhile, the Center for Civil Liberties (CCL) in Kyiv has been advancing human rights and democracy in Ukraine. The center has taken a stand to strengthen Ukrainian civil society and pressure the authorities to make Ukraine a full-fledged democracy.

Two Indian Students Win Prestigious Victorian Premier's Award in Australia

Two female Indian students in Australia - Divyangana Sharma and Ritika Saxena - won the prestigious Victorian Premier's award.
These awards are an initiative of the Victorian government to celebrate outstanding international students in Victoria.
Divyangana Sharma has won the coveted Victorian Premier's Award - International Student of the Year 2021-22, while, Ritika Saxena won the International Student of the Year award in the Research category.

The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for 2022 Will be Awarded to Yunqing Tang

The SASTRA Ramanujan Prize for 2022 will be awarded to Yunqing Tang Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. The Award was instituted by the Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) in 2005. The award includes a cash prize of $10,000 and it is presented annually to individuals aged 32 and below, who made an outstanding contribution to the field of mathematics.
Ms. Yunqing Tang's works displayed a remarkable combination of sophisticated techniques in which the arithmetic and geometry of modular curves and Shimura varieties play a central role.
Tang's recent woke in collaboration with Frank Calegari and Vesselin Dimitrov on the modular equation is of great significance.
Ms. Yunqing Tang was born in China and she completed her B.Sc at Peking University in 2011, following which she went to Harvard University for higher education. In 2016, she completed her Ph.D. under the supervision of Mark Kisin.

French Author Annie Ernaux Wins 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature

French author Annie Ernaux won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature "for the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory."
Annie Ernaux was born in 1940 and grew up in the small town of Yvetot in Normandy.
"Annie Ernaux's debut was Les armoires vides (1974; Cleaned Out, 1990), and already in this work she started her investigation of her Norman background, but it was her fourth book, La place (1983; A Man's Place, 1992), that delivered her literary breakthrough," The Swedish Academy said in a statement.
The prize is awarded by the Swedish Academy and is worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($914,704). The money comes from a bequest left by the prize's creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, in 1895.

Scientist Roxy Koll Receives 2022 Devendra Lal Memorial Medal

Roxy Mathew Koll, a scientist at the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), received the American Geophysical Union's (AGU) 2022 Devendra Lal Memorial Medal. Koll was selected for his outstanding research in Earth and space sciences. He will also be conferred as a Fellow of the AGU. AGU is a non-profit organisation that annually recognises a select number of individuals as part of its honours and recognition programme in Earth and space sciences.
Koll has made breakthrough contributions to science, monitoring, forecasts, and climate change projections for South Asia and the larger Indo-Pacific region. His research provides insights into the mechanisms and impacts of climate change on monsoon floods and droughts, cyclones, heat waves, and the marine ecosystem.
The medal is named in honour of Professor Devendra Lal, a distinguished geophysicist whose work spanned diverse areas of the Earth and space sciences. He is best known for his role in founding and developing the held in which cosmic rays produced isotopes on Earth are used as tracers to investigate a wide range of Earth science problems.

Chemistry Nobel Goes to 3 Scientists "For Development Of Click Chemistry"

The Nobel Prize in chemistry for 2022 was awarded to Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless for developing "an ingenious tool for building molecule".
The Nobel laureautes were awarded for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry, the academy said.
Professor Carolyn Bertozzi of Stanford University, took click chemistry to a new dimension and started utilising it in living organisms. Her bioorthogonal reactions take place without disrupting the normal chemistry of the cell.
Barry Sharpless and Morten Meldal have laid the foundation for a functional form of chemistry – click chemistry – in which molecular building blocks snap together quickly and efficiently.
While American Professor Sharpless works in Scripps Research, Mr. Meldal is a Professor at University of Copenhagen.
Click chemistry is utilised in the development of pharmaceuticals, for mapping DNA and creating materials that are more fit for purpose. Using bioorthogonal reactions, researchers have improved the targeting of cancer pharmaceuticals.
