Police Commemoration Day

  • India marks Police Commemoration Day on October 21 every year to remember the policemen who died in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. The day is dedicated to paying tribute to the bravery and service of police personnel who protect the nation.
  • On October 21, 1959, during a period of heightened tensions along the India-China border, 10 on-duty Indian policemen were ambushed by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Aksai Chin. The policemen were engaged in a reconnaissance mission when they were fired upon without provocation.
  • This assault resulted in the deaths and injuries of several officers. The bodies of the deceased were returned 23 days later and were cremated with full military honours.
  • To pay tribute to the memory of these brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives and to honour all police officers rendering their services to the nation both domestically and internationally, the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police decided in January 1960 to observe October 21 as Police Commemoration Day.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

  • The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 to raise awareness about the people struggling and living in poverty worldwide. It is also a day to recognise all the efforts that are underway on various levels for the eradication of poverty across the world.
  • The United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 47/196, formally recognised October 17 as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in 1992. This recognition was a call to the international community to strengthen its resolve in eradicating poverty and advancing human dignity and human rights for all.
  • The theme for this year's (2024) International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is 'Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment Acting together for just, peaceful and inclusive societies.'

World Anaesthesia Day

  • World Anaesthesia Day is celebrated annually on October 16 to mark the significance of plays in modern medical care. It also serves as a reminder to recognise the work of anesthesiologists, who are essential for hassle-free surgeries.
  • On October 16, 1846, American dentist and physician William Thomas Green Morton conducted the first-ever diethyl ether anaesthesia experiment at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, USA. It was given to remove a tumour in the jaw. This was the first time in history that a patient underwent surgery without feeling any pain.
  • The theme for the World Anaesthesia Day 2024 is 'Workforce Well Being'.

World Food Day

  • World Food Day, observed annually on October 16, serves as a global call to action in the fight against hunger and malnutrition.
  • The member countries of the Food and Agriculture Organisation established World Food Day in November 1979 at the organisation's 20th General Conference and called for the observance of World Food Day on October 16, 1981. This decision was ratified by the UN General Assembly on December 5, 1980 and urged governments and international, national and local organisations to contribute to celebrating World Food Day. Since 1981, World Food Day has been held every year.
  • The theme for World Food Day 2024 is 'Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.'
