CM Yogi Adityanath Honoured Bharat Ratna Dr. Ambedkar Award

Former President of India Ram Nath Kovind honoured Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with the Bharat Ratna Dr. Ambedkar Award for creating a fear-free Uttar Pradesh.
The award ceremony was organized at Shanmukhananda Auditorium in Mumbai where member of the UP legislative council Lalji Prasad Nirmal received the award on behalf of Yogi Adityanath.
The Bharat Ratna Dr. Ambedkar Award is an annual award presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to society in the areas of education, social welfare, and economics, in the spirit of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was a renowned Indian jurist, economist, social reformer, and politician who played a pivotal role in the drafting of the Indian Constitution and fought for the rights of the oppressed sections of Indian society.
The award was instituted in 1996 by the Government of Maharashtra in honour of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and it is presented every year on his birth anniversary. The award carries a cash prize and a citation and is conferred upon individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the society in the spirit of Dr. Ambedkar's vision of social justice, equality, and human rights.
Recipients of the award include individuals from various fields such as social work, education, politics, law, and literature. The award is considered a prestigious recognition in India, and it is given to those who have worked tirelessly to promote Dr. Ambedkar's ideals of social equality and justice.

President Murmu Confers 8 Kirti Chakras, 29 Shaurya Chakras

President Droupadi Murmu conferred eight Kirti Chakras, including five posthumously, to personnel of the Army and paramilitary and police forces for displaying indomitable courage and extraordinary valour in the line of duty.
Kirti Chakra is India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award.
President Murmu also presented 29 Shaurya Chakras, including five posthumously, to the personnel of the armed forces, Central Armed Police Forces and state/Union Territory police during a defence investiture ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Shaurya Chakra is India's third-highest peacetime gallantry award after the Ashok Chakra and Kirti Chakra.

Biologist Sathyabhama Das Biju, Chosen for Harvard University's Prestigious Radcliffe Fellowship

Biologist Sathyabhama Das Biju, who is popularly known as 'the Frogman of India', was chosen for Harvard University's prestigious Radcliffe fellowship.
The Delhi University professor is one of the 50 scholars who were awarded the Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowship for 2023-24.
Prof. Biju has attracted global attention to amphibians in South Asia through his work spanning three decades during which he discovered over a hundred species.
As a Hardy Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (or Harvard Radcliffe Institute) at Harvard University, he will "expedite efforts to outpace nameless extinctions in India's amphibian hotspots through discovery and documentation of species and identification of key biodiversity areas for conservation prioritisation.

Barbara Kingsolver, Hernan Diaz Share Fiction Pulitzer Prize

The Pulitzer Prize for fiction was awarded to two class-conscious novels: "Demon Copperhead," Barbara Kingsolver's modern recasting of the Dickens classic "David Copperfield," and Hernan Diaz's "Trust," an innovative narrative of wealth and deceit set in 1920s New York.
Beverly Gage's "G-Man," her widely acclaimed book on long-time FBI leader J. Edgar Hoover, was given the Pulitzer for biography. "His Name Is George Floyd: One Man's Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice," by Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa, won for general nonfiction.
Sanaz Toossi's play "English" won for drama and Jefferson Cowie's "Freedom's Dominion: A Saga of White Resistance to Federal Power" was honored for history.
The Pulitzer Prize is an award administered by Columbia University for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature, and musical composition within the United States. It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of Joseph Pulitzer, who had made his fortune as a newspaper publisher. Prizes are awarded annually in twenty-two categories. In twenty-one of the categories, each winner receives a certificate and a US$15,000 cash award (raised from $10,000 in 2017). The winner in the public service category is awarded a gold medal.

Ratan Tata Awarded Honorary Doctor of Literature Degree by Sister Nivedita University, Kolkata

Sister Nivedita University, Kolkata awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature degree to Ratan Tata at its inaugural convocation in Kolkata.
Other personalities who were awarded are Chandra Sekhar Ghosh, MD & CEO, Bandhan Bank; Manishankar Mukherjee, writer, novelist and researcher; Sanghamitra Bandopadhyay, Director, Indian Statistical Institute; Martin Kampchen, eminent author, translator, journalist and social worker, and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Eminent sarod player.
Prof Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, Vice- Chancellor, Sister Nivedita University handed over the degrees to the recipients.

Michael Douglas to Receive Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival will honour Michael Douglas with an honorary Palme d'Or for his outstanding career and contributions to cinema. Douglas will be celebrated during the festival's opening ceremony on May 16. Douglas has had a diverse career, starring in numerous acclaimed films like The China Syndrome, Basic Instinct, Falling Down, and Behind the Candelabra, all of which have previously been shown at Cannes.
Previous recipients of the honorary Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival have included Forest Whitaker, Agnes Varda, and Jodie Foster.

Three Imprisoned Iranian Female Journalists Win Top UN Prize

UNESCO marked World Press Freedom Day by awarding its annual World Press Freedom Prize to three imprisoned Iranian female journalists. The winners, Niloufar Hamedi, Elaheh Mohammadi, and Narges Mohammadi, were recognised for their work in reporting on human rights abuses in Iran and their commitment to truth and accountability.
The UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize, named after Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano who was assassinated in 1986, is awarded to those who have made an outstanding contribution to press freedom. UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay emphasized the importance of paying tribute to women journalists who are prevented from doing their jobs and who face threats and attacks on their personal safety, saying: "Now more than ever, it is important to pay tribute to all women journalists who are prevented from doing their jobs and who face threats and attacks on their personal safety."
