World Hydrography Day

  • World Hydrography Day, a significant occasion officially recognised and implemented by the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO), is marked annually on June 21. This day holds great importance as it serves as a platform to highlight the crucial work carried out by hydrographers worldwide and to promote the significance of hydrography itself. Through various activities and events organized on this day, the IHO aims to increase public awareness and understanding of hydrography's role in ensuring safe and efficient navigation, sustainable marine resource management, and coastal zone development.
  • The International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) was established in 1921, serving as a prominent entity focused on addressing various aspects of marine life. Headquartered in Monaco, the organization played a crucial role in advocating navigation-related concerns, setting technical standards, and protecting marine environments, engaging directly with governments.
  • The organization presented its idea to the United Nations General Assembly, which approved and welcomed the initiative. The UNGA later adopted it as a resolution, and since then, World Hydrography Day is observed annually on June 21, coinciding with the IHO's anniversary.
  • Each year, World Hydrography Day focuses on a specific theme. World Hydrography Day 2023 theme was 'Hydrography - underpinning the digital twin of the ocean'.

International Yoga Day

  •  International Yoga Day is celebrated every year on June 21st to promote the numerous benefits of practicing yoga. The chosen date coincides with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This day serves as a platform to raise awareness about the holistic approach to well-being that yoga offers.
  • In its 9th edition, this year's (2023) International Day of Yoga was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UN Headquarters on June 21. This marked the first time a yoga session was conducted by the Prime Minister at this location.
  • During his speech at the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi put forward the concept of a dedicated yoga day. On December 11, 2014, all 193 member states of the United Nations unanimously agreed to observe the International Day of Yoga on June 21. The inaugural celebration occurred on June 21, 2015. Since then, International Yoga Day has become a global phenomenon, and it is now celebrated in over 190 countries.
  • The theme for International Day of Yoga 2023 is 'Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', which represents our shared desire for 'One Earth, One Family, One Future'.

World Refugee Day

  • World Refugee Day is observed annually on June 20. It is an international day dedicated to raising awareness about the challenges faced by refugees worldwide. This significant day serves as a platform to honour the strength, courage, and resilience of millions of individuals who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution, or terror.
  • World Refugee Day dates back to December 4, 2000, when the United Nations General Assembly established it through Resolution 55/76. The resolution aimed to raise awareness about the increasing number of refugees worldwide and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.
  • The 1951 Refugee Convention, adopted in the aftermath of World War II, established the legal framework for the protection and rights of refugees. It defined who qualifies as a refugee, outlined their rights, and outlined the obligations of nations to provide them with safety and assistance.
  • World Refugee Day was first celebrated on June 20, 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
  • 'Hope Away from Home' is the theme for World Refugee Day 2023.

National Reading Day

  • National Reading Day is celebrated on June 19 in India to honour Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, popularly known as P. N. Panicker. He was a renowned teacher and revered as the father of the library movement in Kerala. He died on June 19, 1995. In 1996, for the first time the Kerala Reading Day was celebrated on his death anniversary to pay tribute to him. Since then, it is celebrated on June 19 every year.
  • In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared June 19 as the National Reading Day.
  • In 1926, Panicker, who worked as a teacher in his hometown founded his first library. He started 47 local libraries in order to promote reading habits among people. The main purpose of these libraries was to boost local education and reading.

World Sauntering Day

  • World Sauntering Day, observed annually on June 19, serves as a reminder to take a break and rediscover the beauty in each day.
  • World Sauntering Day was founded by WT Rabe in 1979 during his employment at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan. In response to the rising popularity of the jogging craze in the United States during the 1970s, Rabe introduced the concept of this day, urging people to slow down and take it easy.
  • Recognizing the importance of embracing a more leisurely pace amidst the prevailing fast-paced lifestyle, Rabe established sauntering guidelines for the observance of this day. He encouraged individuals to relax and enjoy the moment by sauntering rather than rushing. According to Rabe, sauntering could involve leisurely walks with a dog and wearing loose attire, allowing for a more comfortable and relaxed experience.
  • The theme for World Sauntering Day 2023 is 'Rediscover the Joy of Simplicity'.

World Sickle Cell Awareness Day

  • World Sickle Cell Day is observed on June 19 annually to create awareness about the sickle cell disease and to spread information about the disease, challenges faced by the patients, their families and caregivers.
  • On this day, various organisations around the world come together to promote awareness through campaigns and activities, which recognise the necessity of the early diagnosis of sickle cell disease and its treatment.
  • World Sickle Cell Awareness Day has its origins in a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted on December 22, 2008. The resolution recognised sickle cell disease as a global health concern and designated June 19th as the official day to raise awareness about the disease worldwide.
  • The resolution was a response to the pressing need for increased awareness and attention to sickle cell disease, which affects millions of people globally, particularly those of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and South Asian descent. Sickle cell disease is a major public health issue, causing significant morbidity and mortality in affected individuals.
  • The theme for 2023 World Sickle Disease Day 2023 is 'Building and strengthening Global Sickle Cell Communities, Formalizing New-born Screening and Knowing your Sickle Cell Disease Status', a call to recognise the first step (understanding the genotype in infants and adults) in fighting sickle cell disease.

Autistic Pride Day

  • Autistic Pride Day is celebrated on June 18 every year across the world to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and to move society away from discrimination and stigma associated with the condition. A significant aspect of Autistic Pride Day is that it is run by people with autism. The day aims to spread the message that those with autism are not diseased but different from others.
  • Autistic Pride Day was first observed by the online community Aspies for Freedom (AFF) in 2005 to give autistic people the opportunity to celebrate their neurodiversity and differences. A number of events are organised to mark the day and autistic people and families share their success stories. Over the years, the day gained popularity and grew into a global event that is extensively celebrated both online and offline. Meetings, days out, picnics, walks and week-long gatherings are held to celebrate Autistic Pride Day.

World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought

  • The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed on June 17 each year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day offers a chance to recognize that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels.
  • The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 17 as the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought through its resolution A/RES/49/115 which was adopted in December 1994.
