India's First Forest University to Come Up in Telangana

  • India is soon going to get its first forest university. The Telangana legislative assembly approved the University of Forestry (UOF) Act 2022. The 'University of Forestry (UOF) will be the first of its kind in the country. With only Russia and China having forest universities in the world, globally, this will be the third university of forestry.

Ahmedabad Civic Body-run Medical College Named after Prime Minister Modi

  • A medical college run by an education trust of the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) was named after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The Medical Education Trust (MET) runs the college in Ahmedabad's Maninagar area. "Now, the 'AMC MET Medical College', which runs from the campus of AMC-run LG Hospital in Maninagar area of the city, would be known as 'Narendra Modi Medical College', announced Hitesh Barot, chairman of the municipal corporation's standing committee.

IIT Mandi Develops Method to Study the Insides of Important Living Cell Components

  • Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, in collaboration with the University of Cincinnati, USA, developed an efficient method to study the internal structure and functions of an important component of living cells. The researchers used metal nanoclusters in a method called Structured Illumination Microscopy to observe the nanodimensional features and functions of lysosomes and their interactions with another important cell organelle, mitochondria.

  • The new school will offer a host of Undergraduate and Post-graduate online programmes such as BBA, BSc in Economics, BCA, MBA, MSc in Computer Applications, MSc in Data Sciences, MSc in Economics and MA in Mass Communication. Candidates have time till October 30 to apply for these courses, which will begin on November 15.

HC Dismisses Reappointment of Sonali Chakrabarti as Calcutta University VC

  • A division bench of the Calcutta High Court dismissed a decision of the state government to reappoint Sonali Chakrabarti Banerjee as the Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University.
  • Daughter of the late legendary Bengal poet, Nirendranath Chakrabarti, Sonali Chakrabarti Banerjee, is wife of Alapan Banerjee, former West Bengal Chief Secretary and the current chief advisor to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
  • She is also the first woman Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University.
  • In August 2021, the state government had announced its decision to re-appoint Sonali Chakrabarti Banerjee. However, that decision was challenged in the court by advocate Anindya Sundar Das.

US Sends Education Trade Mission to India

  • The United States commerce department is leading an education trade mission to Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi to identify and promote opportunities for collaboration between Indian and American institutes of higher education.
  • The delegation, which will be in India during September 12-16, includes 21 American higher education institutions (HEIs) from 15 states. Three education technology and service providers are part of the delegation to bring their world-class capabilities to India.
  • Education is one of the key pillars of India-US cooperation, and US missions in India have issued 82,000 student visas so far in 2022, higher than in any previous year.
  • Referring to the education trade mission, US chargé d'affaires Patricia Lacina said, "This trade mission will explore new partnerships in education and will further strengthen the strong and growing higher education ties between the US and India."

IIT-Madras First Indian Institute to join IBM Quantum Network

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-Madras) joined the IBM Quantum Network, and became the first Indian institute to do so.
  • This network aims to advance quantum computing skills development and research in India. IIT Madras would now get cloud-based access to IBM's most advanced quantum computing systems. It would also get to explore practical applications of the technology.
  • The Centre for Quantum Quantum Information, Communication and Computing (CQuICC) at IIT Madras was developed to focus on advancing core algorithms in research areas such as Quantum Machine Learning, Quantum Optimization, and applications research in finance.

IIM Bangalore Recognised as India's Best B-school in FT MiM Ranking

  • Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore was declared India's best business school in the Financial Times (FT) Masters in Management (MiM) Ranking 2022.
  • The institute's global position also saw a leap this year - IIMB is at number 31 globally in 2022, up from number 47 in 2021.
  • It was ranked the highest on parameters such as value for money, women on the institute's board, faculty with doctorates, international course experience, and weighted salary in US dollars.

US Issued the Highest Number of Student Visas to Indians in 2022

  • As per the US Embassy in India, the United States issued a record of 82,000 student visas to Indians in 2022, the highest than any country.
  • This shows that the United States remains for most Indian families the most sought-after country for higher education.
  • Indian students comprise nearly 20 per cent of all international students studying in the United States, with the Open Doors report in 2021 showing there were 1,67,582 students from India in the 2020-2021 academic year.

WB Govt. UNICEF Rope in SHGs to Stop Child Marriage, Teenage Pregnancy

  • The West Bengal government in collaboration with UNICEF would form child-friendly 'sanghas' (clusters), comprising members of self-help groups (SHG), to curb child marriage and teenage pregnancy in the state, which is the highest in the country.
  • To stop these twin menaces, the state government and UNICEF planned, as a pilot project, to form 110 child-friendly 'sanghas' in the next six months in 87 blocks in all 23 districts of the state.
  • This initiative is aimed at addressing the issues that affect the lives of SHG members and their family members," Vibhu Goel, State Mission Director and CEO of West Bengal State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM), said at the end of a validation workshop.

IIT Madras, University of Sydney Join Hands to Address International Energy Challenges

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) teamed up with the University of Sydney for a research partnership to help address the energy challenges the world is facing. As a part of this partnership, both the institutes would invest AU $50,000 a year in joint funding for up to four research projects.
  • In this partnership, researchers from both the institutions would work as a team to develop research and advance technology in fields related to energy. Researchers of both institutes from science and engineering fields are encouraged to come ahead and help in areas such as energy storage and conversion, solar desalination and cold storage, photo and electrochemical energy, gas turbines, micro-grids and renewable energy systems.

NCERT Approaches UGC for 'Deemed University' Status

  • With the government's proposal of making the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) an "institute of national importance" on the back burner, the NCERT is now vying for another tag — deemed to be university.
  • NCERT, an autonomous academic body advising the Centre on matters of school education, is learned to have applied to the University Grants Commission (UGC) for the "deemed university" status under the de novo category.
