Priya A.S. Receives Sahitya Akademi Award 2023 for Children's Literature

  • Priya A. S. won the prestigious (Kendra) Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2023 for children's literature in the Malayalam language for her 2018 novel 'Perumazhayathe Kunjithalukal'. She won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Children's Literature for the same novel in 2020.
  • On November 1, 2018, IE Malayalam, the Malayalam news portal of The Indian Express, began its children's literature section with the publication of Perumazhayathe Kunjithalukal. The book was featured in the Sammanapothi series by Poorna Books.
  • The (Kendra) Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar consists of Rs. 50,000 and an engraved copper plaque. Panels of three members each picked the winners in each language. Dr. Paul Manalil, B. S. Rajeev, and Mundoor Sethumadhavan were the jury members for Malayalam. Priya's novel was selected from a list of 10 recommended books.

British MP Barry Gardiner, Late Theatre Director Peter Brook Receive Padma Shri in UK

  • British member of Parliament Barry Gardiner and late British theatre director Peter Brook were formally conferred their Padma Shri awards at a special ceremony at India House in London.
  • Gardiner, an Opposition Labour Party MP for Brent North in London, was conferred one of India's prestigious civilian honours in 2020 for his contributions to the field of public affairs but could not receive his award from the President due to the COVID lockdown.
  • Theatre director Peter Brook, best known in India for his epic adaptation of 'The Mahabharata', was conferred his award for contributions to the field of art in 2021. His son, Simon Brook, collected the award on behalf of his father, who died last year aged 97.

Modi Recieves Egypt's Highest State Honour

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the highest civilian honour of Egypt, the 'Order of the Nile', by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The honour is conferred upon heads of states, crown princes, and vice-presidents who offer Egypt or humanity invaluable services.
  • Instituted in 1915, it is a pure gold collar consisting of three square gold units comprising Pharaonic symbols.
  • This was the 13th such highest state honour that various countries across the world have conferred upon PM Modi. In the nine years of his tenure, PM Modi has received many international awards including Legion of Merit by the US Government, Companion of the Order of Fiji, and Ebakl Award by the Republic of Palau among others.

NTPC Receives 'Most Preferred Workplace of 2023-24' Award from Team Marksmen

  • NTPC, India's largest power generator, was recognised by Team Marksmen as the 'Most Preferred Workplace of 2023-24'.   • Sital Kumar, CEO (UPL) & ED (HR) of NTPC, along with other NTPC officials, proudly accepted the distinguished recognition on behalf of the organization. The award ceremony was conducted by Team Marksmen in association with India Today and Business Standard, following a comprehensive consumer study conducted across the industry.

President of India Presents National Florence Nightingale Awards for 2022 and 2023 (24)

  • The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, bestowed the National Florence Nightingale Awards for the years 2022 and 2023 to nursing professionals during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. These prestigious awards were established by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in 1973 to honour the exceptional contributions made by nurses and nursing professionals to society.
  • The National Florence Nightingale Awards are considered one of the highest honours in the nursing profession in India. They highlight the significant role nurses play in the healthcare system and recognize their selfless commitment to saving lives and promoting well-being.
  • The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 50000, a certificate and a medal.

IOC Awards Olympic Order to WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus

  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded Tedros Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), with the Olympic Order. This recognition was given to Tedros for his inspiring efforts in making the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 happen, even amidst the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The presentation of the Olympic Order took place at the Olympic House and was done by the President of the IOC, Thomas Bach.
  • In addition, President Bach extended an invitation to Tedros to be a distinguished guest of honour at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. This invitation signifies the high regard and respect the IOC has for Tedros and his significant contributions.

Karan Johar Honoured by UK Parliament for Contribution to Entertainment Industry

  • Director Karan Johar was honoured by the British Parliament for his contribution to the global entertainment industry as he completed 25 years as a filmmaker in 2023.
  • Indian-origin House of Lords peer Baroness Sandy Verma presented the citation to Johar.
  • Johar made his directorial debut in 1998 with "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", and has gone on to become one of the most influential figures in the Indian film industry. As a director, his credits include "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…", "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna", and "My Name Is Khan". He has films such as "Kal Ho Naa Ho", "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani", "Kapoor & Sons", and "Raazi" to his credit as a producer. Also a presenter, Johar hosts his celebrity chat show "Koffee With Karan".

Acharya Gopi Conferred for First Prof. Jayashankar Award

  • Eminent poet, literary critic and Sahitya Akademi Award recipient Acharya N. Gopi was conferred the Prof. Kothapalli Jayashankar Award instituted by Bharat Jagruthi, a cultural organisation and extended arm of Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The award was presented to Acharya Gopi at an event to be organised at Telangana Saraswatha Parishath in Abids. According to Bharat Jagruthi, the award has been instituted earlier this year (2023) for honouring the littérateurs every year.

Salman Rushdie Wins Prestigious German Peace Prize

  • Author Salman Rushdie was selected for the prestigious German prize for his literary work and for his resolve in the face of a constant threat to his life. The Peace Prize of the German Book Trade for 2023 said that the author will receive the award in Frankfurt on October 22.
  • The award's Board of Trustees described Rushdie as a passionate defender of freedom of thought and expression - just as equally for himself as for those whose views he does not share.
  • He was awarded for his indomitable spirit, for his affirmation of life and for enriching our world with his love of storytelling.
