International Day of Action for Women's Health

  • International Day of Action for Women's Health is observed on May 28 each year. This day is dedicated to promoting and protecting women's health and well-being. It also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the issues faced by women and girls around the world.
  • In the year 1987, the Latin American and Caribbean Women's Health Network (LACWHN) declared May 28 as International Day of Action for Women's Health during the Women's meeting in Costa Rica. Later, Women's Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) promoted this day on an international level, including Latin America.
  • The theme for the International Day of Action for Women's Health 2024 is 'Mobilizing in critical times of threats and opportunities'.

World Football Day 2024

  • In 2024, the world marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament involving teams from all regions, held on May 25, 1924, during the Summer Olympic Games in Paris. To honour this milestone, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution A/RES/78/281 on May 7, 2024, proclaiming May 25 as World Football Day.
  • The resolution recognises "the global reach of football and its impact in various spheres, including commerce, peace, and diplomacy." It highlights how football creates a space for cooperation and acknowledges the fundamental role of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and regional and national soccer federations in promoting the game.
  • The resolution encourages all countries to support football and other sports as tools to promote peace, development, and the empowerment of women and girls. It also urges the adoption of policies and programs to promote football and physical activities.

International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories

  • The U.N. commemorates International Week of Solidarity with Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories annually from May 25 to May 31. The U.N. describes a Non-Self-Governing Territory as a territory "whose people have not yet gained a complete degree of self-government." This day aims to request the administering Powers to protect and respect the rights of the peoples in these territories to their natural resources and their property rights. Currently, there are 17 non-self-governing territories left in the world.
  • The United Nations has designated May 25 to 31 as the "International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Non-Self-Governing Territories." Established by the UN General Assembly on December 6, 1999, this observance highlights the struggles of these territories and promotes their right to self-determination. According to the UN Charter, a Non-Self-Governing Territory refers to a territory where its people have not yet achieved complete self-government.

  • The history of International Day to End Obstetric Fistula can be traced to 2003 when U.N.F.P.A. launched the 'Campaign to End Fistula.' In 2013, the United Nations began observing International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, making it an annual campaign.
  • This year's (2024) theme, 'Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide', underscores the urgent need to address obstetric fistula comprehensively, emphasizing equitable access to quality maternal health services, social reintegration, and sustained investment in healthcare systems.

  • International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated on May 22 annually.
  • The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) was established in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly. The IDB is celebrated annually on 22 May to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The IDB was established in response to the growing concern about the loss of biodiversity. Biodiversity is essential for human life and well-being. It provides us with food, shelter, and other essential resources. It also regulates our climate, purifies our water, and enriches our cultural heritage.
  • The theme for this year's (2024) International Day for Biological Day Diversity is 'Be part of the plan'.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

  • Held every year on May 21, UNESCO leads the celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development highlighting not only the richness of the world's cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development.
  • In 2002, the United Nations declared World Day for Cultural Diversity would be celebrated every May 21.

National Anti-Terrorism Day

  • Every year on May 21 India celebrates Anti-Terrorism Day to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Sriperumbridor, a village now known as Chennai, on 21 May 1991. National Anti-Terrorism Day was first established in the country by the V. P. Singh government to commemorate the life of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and to educate people about the negative impact of terrorism and violence on society and the nation. The day also aims to promote peace and harmony in the country.
