India 3rd Largest Military Spender, Shows Data from SIPRI

India was the third-highest military spender in the world behind the US and China as the global defence expenditure reached an all-time high of $2.1 trillion in 2021, hitting record levels despite the coronavirus pandemic as per the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). The top five military spenders—the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom, and Russia—accounted for 62 per cent of the global military expenditure.
The US accounted for 38 per cent of the global military spending, and China for about 14 per cent even as the UK moved up two ranks, spending $68.4 billion in 2021. The report noted that China's military expenditure has grown for the 27th consecutive year.

The First Edition of Naval Commanders' Conference of 2022 in New Delhi

The first edition of four-day Naval Commanders' Conference commenced in New Delhi. All Operational and Area Commanders of the Indian Navy are participating in the conference to review major Operational, Materiel, Logistics, Human Resource Development, Training and Administrative activities.
The conference will focus on addressing the contemporary security paradigms while seeking ways to enhance combat capability of the Navy and make operations more effective and efficient. The Commanders' Conference is being conducted in the newly set up state-of-the-art facility at Defence Offices Complex at Africa Avenue in New Delhi.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Inaugurates DefConnect 2.0 Organised by iDEX-DIO

With an aim of taking start-ups and innovators in the defence ecosystem to a notch higher, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) Prime and sixth Defence India Start-up Challenge (DISC 6) during DefConnect 2.0 in New Delhi. The iDEX-Prime is aimed at supporting projects, requiring support beyond Rs 1.5 crore up to Rs 10 crore in the ever-growing defence start-ups.
Notably, DefConnect will provide a unique opportunity for defence innovators associated with iDEX-DIO to showcase their capabilities, products and state-of-the-art-technologies to the target audience of the industry leaders.

NATO Conducts Cyber Defense Exercises Called Locked Shields in Estonia

A cyber organisation recognised by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation undertook the world's largest and most complicated "live-fire" cyber defence drills. The biennial Locked Shields event, according to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Estonia, was designed to improve the skills of cybersecurity experts protecting national IT systems and vital infrastructure against real-time attacks.
The participants are sent to help a fake country deal with a massive cyberattack. The Locked Shields event this year takes place in the midst of the ongoing war in Ukraine, in which hacking has played a steady, albeit minor, role in Russia's invasion. Hackers linked to the Russian government have been accused of assaulting Ukrainian government offices and attempting to break into the power infrastructure.

IAF, Navy Tie Up with DRDO to Acquire CHAFF to Shield Warships, Fighter Aircraft

The Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy tied up with the Defence Research Development Organisation to get the CHAFF technology, which protects the warship from an anti-ship missile during hostilities. India is now the second country after the United States to develop this ability, a major Aatmanirbhar push in the field of defence.
CHAFF is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircrafts or naval ships from enemy radar-guided missile during war. The significance of this technology lies in the fact that very less quantity of CHAFF material deployed in the air acts as a decoy to deflect enemy's missiles to ensure safety of the fighter aircraft or naval ships.
Developed by the DRDO, the technology includes all three variants of CHAFF rockets namely Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR) and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR), and have been inducted in the Indian Navy after successful user trials.

MoU Signed Between Indian Navy (IN) and M/s Larsen and Toubro (L&T)

The MoU aims to engage M/s L&T as a Knowledge Partner for nurturing technologies in various domains, for induction into the Indian Navy. Further, the MoU aims to bring together IN and L&T to collaborate on innovative and pioneering projects related to contemporary and emerging technologies of mutual interest.
The MoU encompasses all the aspects related to Electrical, Weapon, Engineering, Machinery and Control, and Hull of a Naval Warship.
