ICG Ship 'Kamla Devi', Last Vessel of FPV Series, Commissioned

  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship 'Kamla Devi', the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) designed, built and delivered by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd to the Indian Coast Guard was commissioned.
  • ICGS Kamla Devi is officially the fifth and last vessel of the series of FPVs designed and built by GRSE as per the specifications of the Indian Coast Guard.
  • ICGS Kamla Devi is 48.9 meters long and 7.5 meters wide with a displacement of 308 tonnes. With three engines and water jets, she is capable of a top speed of 34 knots and an endurance of over 1,500 nautical miles. She also has an Integrated Bridge System and is fitted with a 40/60 gun as the main armament.

ReNew Power Installs India's First 3x Platform Wind Turbine Generators

  • ReNew Power installed India's first 3x platform wind turbine generators (WTGs) in Gadag, Karnataka.
  • The WTGs have a nameplate capacity of 3.3-3.465 MW and are 128-140m in height. They offer significantly improved capacity over models installed in India to date, which typically have a nameplate capacity of 2-3 MW.
  • The new WTGs will be a part of the country's first 'Round the Clock' renewable energy project, combining wind, solar and a battery energy storage system (BESS). This project will produce enough energy to power over 1 million households in India annually.

Defence Ministry Clears Proposals Worth Rs. 4,276 Crore

  • The defence ministry approved three procurement proposals, including that of Helina anti-tank guided missiles, at a total cost of Rs. 4,276 crore. The move is aimed at bolstering the combat capabilities of the armed forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
  • All the three proposals - two of the Indian Army and one of the Indian Navy - under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category were cleared by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Indian Navy Signs Agreement for Autonomous Armed Boat Swarms under SPRINT Initiative

  • The Indian Navy inked an agreement with Sagar Defence Engineering Pvt. Ltd for acquiring armed autonomous boat swarms under the 'SPRINT' initiative, which aims to promote development and usage of indigenous defence technologies by domestic companies. The task of development of this technology is one of the 75 challenges that were introduced by the Indian Navy under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav last year (2022).
  • This is the 50th contract that was signed under 'SPRINT'.
  • Sagar Defence Engineering has the know-how to create the nation's first armed autonomous unmanned boat with swarming capabilities.

India Deploys Platoon of Women Peacekeepers in UN mission in Abyei

  • India, among the largest troop-contributing countries to United Nations peacekeeping, deployed a platoon of women peacekeepers in Abyei.
  • The move heralded India's intent of increasing significantly the number of women in peacekeeping contingents.
  • This is be India's largest single unit of women Peacekeepers in a UN Mission since India deployed the first-ever all-women's contingent in Liberia in 2007.
  • The Indian contingent, comprising two officers and 25 other ranks, forms part of an engagement platoon and specialise in community outreach and performing extensive security-related tasks as well.
