Environment Minister Yadav To Address Desertification COP
Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav lead an Indian delegation at the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP-15) of the UNCCD at Abidjan in Cote d'Ivoire. Mr Yadav addressed the high-level segment, including a Heads of States Summit.
Despite COVID pandemic, India as President of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP-14 made significant contributions in bringing the nations together toward the global goal of halting and reversing land degradation.
India had hosted the fourteenth session of Conference of Parties of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification from 2nd to 13th September 2019 in New Delhi and is the current President of the same. At COP-14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that India would raise its ambition of the total area that would be restored from its land degradation status, from twenty-one million hectares to twenty-six million hectares between now and 2030.

Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated a vehicle scrapping facility in Nuh district of Haryana. The automobile scrapping policy brought by the Union government will reduce pollution, while increasing the production capacity in the sector at lower cost. The biggest benefit from this policy will be that copper, steel, aluminum, rubber and plastic will be easily available.
The automobile sector is providing employment to crores of people in the country. By the end of 2024, this new vehicle scrapping policy will generate a large number of jobs and this policy will also play an important role in cleaning the environment.

UN-Energy Plan of Action Towards 2025 Launched
With the launch of a UN-Energy Plan of Action Towards 2025, the UN took a major step towards catalyzing the large-scale action and support needed for the transition to clean, affordable energy for all and net-zero emissions against the backdrop of a global energy crisis and worsening climate emergency. Around 30 important organisations, including UN-Energy, launched the 'Plan of Action.'
According to the UN, an Energy Compact Action Network has been established to connect nations seeking support for their clean energy ambitions with governments and corporations that have pledged more than $600 billion to support these commitments.
As part of this, UNDP is scaling up its energy work to help countries achieve a just energy transition, allowing them to make progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals while also addressing the climate problem.

Vaquita: World's most Endangered Sea Mammal 'Not Doomed'
According to a genetic study, the world's rarest sea mammal still has a chance of survival, despite numbering only about 10 in the wild.
The vaquita porpoise is teetering on the brink of extinction, but scientists say DNA tests show the population is still genetically viable.
The tiny silvery porpoise lives only in Mexico's Gulf of California.
However, it faces an existential threat from being caught in large weighted nets, known as gillnets.

World's Only Bird of this Species Resides in Odisha's Mangalajodi Wetland
As per reports, there is only one bird of this species that exists in the whole wide world. And that's in our very own Odisha! The world's only White grey-headed swamphen can be found in the Mangalajodi wetland, which is around 70 km from Bhubaneshwar.
The colour of the bird - which has an almost all-white plumage because of genetic dilution - lends it its rare element. A team of three researchers - wildlife warden of Khordha Subhendu Mallik, associate professor at Shakti Nanda and assistant conservator of forests - identified the purpose.

Rajasthan Turns Out as the First 10 GW Solar State
According to Mercom's India Solar Project Tracker, Rajasthan became the first state in India to reach 10 GW of cumulative large-scale solar installations. The state has a total installed power capacity of 32.5 GW, with renewables accounting for 55 per cent, thermal energy for 43 per cent, and nuclear energy accounting for the remaining 2%. Solar is the most common energy source, accounting for roughly 36 per cent of total capacity and 64 per cent of renewables.
