Over 150 Heritage Sites Destroyed By Russia in Ukraine

  • UN experts have confirmed the full or partial destruction of 152 cultural and historic heritage sites in Ukraine since Russia invaded the country.
  • They include museums and monuments, churches and other religious buildings, and libraries and other exceptional buildings, UNESCO said it in update of its efforts to assist Ukraine authorities in documenting the damage.
  • The agency has been helping Ukraine authorities to mark landmarks with the distinctive "blue shield," meaning they are protected under the 1954 Hague convention on culture in armed conflicts, of which both Russia and Ukraine are signatories.

Union Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy Inaugurates Festival 'Jyotirgamaya'

  • Union Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy inaugurated 'Jyotirgamaya' – a festival showcasing the talent of unsung performers in New Delhi. As part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav and on the occasion of World Music Day, Sangeet Natak Akademi organised this festival to showcase the talent of rare musical instruments from across the country, including street performers and train entertainers.
  • The festival envisages sensitising people about the need to safeguard the craft of making as well as the skill of playing rare musical instruments. This is a unique endeavour of Sangeet Natak Akademi to salvage the dying performing arts of India.

'Shabash Mithu': A biopic on Mithali Raj

  • Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji dropped the trailer of "Shabaash Mithu", a Taapsee Pannu-starrer biopic on former India women's cricket team captain Mithali Raj. The film is set to hit theatres on July 15. The film has been written by Priyan Aven who makes her debut as a screenplay writer with Shabaash Mithu. Amit Trivedi has provided music for the film with lyrics by Swanand Kirkire, Kausar Munir and Raghav M. Kumar, and sound designed by Academy Award winner Rasool Pookutty.
  • The trailer shows glimpses from the inspirational life of Mithali, the highest run scorer in international women's cricket and an inspiration for several budding women cricketers in India. It shows Mithali's journey not only as a cricketer but also as a woman sportsperson fighting for parity in a male-dominated sport.

Unmesh: Himachal Pradesh International Literary Festival

  • The Three-day literature fest 'Unmesha', which was jointly organised by the Union Ministry of Culture, Sahitya Akademi and the Himachal Pradesh Department of Language and Culture, was part of the series of events under the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav'. It was held in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh.
  • "Unmesha-Festival of Expression", saw more than 425 litterateurs from 15 countries in attendance.
  • Prominent personalities from the art and literature, including the winner of the 2022 Man Booker Prize Geetanjali Shree, Gulzar, Deepti Naval, Sonal Mansingh, Prasoon Joshi, Vikram Sampath, Vishal Bhardwaj and SL Bhyrappa participated in the event.
  • It featured discussions, paper presentations, poetry readings and story readings by eminent writers, poets and critics. There were sessions on tribal literature and LGBTQ writings and one session on Himachali folk songs too.

Italy Creates New Museum for Trafficked Ancient Artefacts

  • Italy was so successful in recovering ancient artworks and artefacts that were illegally exported from the country that it created a museum for them.
  • The Museum of Rescued Art was inaugurated in a cavernous structure that is part of Rome's ancient Baths of Diocletian. The Octagonal Hall exhibition space was designed to showcase Italy's efforts, through patient diplomacy and court challenges, to get valuable antiquities repatriated, often after decades in foreign museums or private collections.
