IIT Kanpur to Organise Udghosh National Open School Quiz

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) is gearing up for its annual sports festival, Udghosh 2023 and in order to bring the festival closer to school students, the institute announced Udghosh National Open School Quiz (UNOSQ) for students from classes 5 to 12.
The competition will be conducted in two phases and the participants will have to showcase their logical thinking, problem-solving abilities, general knowledge and sports acumen.
The quiz is divided into four pools to cater to different age groups— Pool A for youngsters (Classes 5 and 6), Pool B for rising stars (Classes 7 and 8), Pool C for champions (Classes 9 and 10) and Pool D for pioneers (Classes 11 and 12).

Highest Number of NEET UG Applicants from Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu

The highest number of applications for medical exam National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG in the last five years from among state boards was from Maharashtra, according to the National Testing Agency (NTA). The Karnataka state board was at the second spot followed by Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh in terms of applicants.
The NEET-UG is the qualifying entrance exam for admission to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS).

ETS to Set Up TOEFL, GRE Test Centres in Kashmir

US-based Educational Testing Service (ETS) announced that they will set up test centres for TOEFL and GRE in the Kashmir valley. The test centre will come up at Hashtag Educational Services, located at the Regal Chowk, Srinagar. The aim of setting up the test centres in a prime location is to offer easy accessibility to the test takers.
ETS is the non-profit educational assessment, research and measurement organisation and the owner of assessments such as TOEFL and GRE.
Following this development, ETS India plans to further invest in partnering with agents and educational institutions in the Kashmir region, to support local students in their study abroad journeys.

UGC Drafts Guidelines to Recognise Foreign Degrees, Bars Online or Distance Mode

The UGC released draft guidelines for recognition of degrees from foreign institutions and left out degrees obtained under online or distance education mode.
The regulations will not be applicable to professional qualifications awarded by foreign educational institutions in disciplines such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, and Architecture.
Guidelines were also issued for educational qualifications from schools under a foreign board, or any degree from an offshore campus.
The regulations came at a time when foreign universities are in the advanced stages of setting up campuses at GIFT City in Gujarat and Indian universities are collaborating with institutions abroad to offer dual or joint degrees.
A degree from a foreign higher educational institution will be recognised and granted equivalence only if a student physically attends an institute recognised by the home country, the UGC stated.

Jharkhand CM Launches Free Residential Coaching for PVTG Students

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren inaugurated free residential coaching for PVTG candidates at Dr. Ramdayal Munda Tribal Welfare Research Institute in Ranchi. Soren said that Jharkhand's eight tribes are listed in the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) out of a total of 32 tribes in the state.
The PVTGs are inching towards extinction and it is the responsibility of the government to protect them and provide employment opportunities.
This is the first of its kind initiative in the country where such a scheme has been launched to uplift the PVTGs.
More than 400 students from the eight tribes including Asur, Malphariya, Saurya Pahariya, Birjiya, Korba, Birhor, and Sabar had applied for free coaching for preparation for the examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

Infosys Foundation Announces STEM Scholarship for Underprivileged Girls

Infosys Foundation, the philanthropy and CSR arm of the technology company, committed Rs. 100 crore for encouraging STEM education among underprivileged girl students.
The foundation launched a scholarship called 'STEM Stars' to support the education of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
More than 2,000 girl students, who intend to pursue higher education in any of the STEM fields in reputed colleges in any part of India, will get financial assistance for four years as part of the programme's first phase.
The scholarship will help cover tuition fees, living expenses, and study material of up to Rs 100,000 annually for the duration of a STEM course. In its inaugural year, this scholarship will cover NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) accredited institutes that include the Indian Institutes of Technology, BITS-Pilani, National Institutes of Technology, and renowned medical colleges.

Kerala to Integrate POCSO Act, Scientific Waste Management Lessons in School Curriculum

To shed light on the importance of cleanliness and child protection laws, the Kerala government announced that lessons on scientific waste management and the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act will be part of the school syllabus from the next academic year.
Announced by State General Education Minister V. Sivankutty, this initiative aims to instil knowledge of sustainable waste management and awareness about the POCSO Act to foster a more informed future generation.
