Winners of Infosys Prize 2023

Historian Jahnavi Phalkey was announced as the winner of the Infosys Prize 2023 in Humanities. Phalkey was awarded for her brilliant and granular insights into the individual, institutional, and material histories of scientific research in modern India.
Karuna Mantena was awarded the Infosys Prize 2023 in Social Sciences for her research on "the theory of imperial rule, and the claim that this late imperial ideology became one of the important factors in the emergence of modern social theory.
Professor Sachchida Nand Tripathi, from IIT, Kanpur, was given the Infosys Prize 2023 for pioneering a large-scale sensor-based air quality network, mobile laboratories, and AI+ML-driven data analysis.
Professor Mukund Thattai from the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, was declared the winner of the Infosys Prize 2023 in Physical Sciences for his contributions to evolutionary cell biology.
The Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) selects the winners of the Infosys Prize in six categories: engineering and computer science, humanities, life sciences, mathematical sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences. Each category's prize comprises a gold medal, a citation, and a prize purse of $100,000 (or its equivalent in rupees).

Salman Rushdie Honoured With First 'Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award'

World-renowned author Salman Rushdie was awarded the first-ever 'Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award' by the Vaclav Havel Centre.
The 'Disturbing the Peace Award to a Courageous Writer at Risk' was conferred upon Egyptian activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah. Despite being imprisoned, Abdel-Fattah remains a symbol of resistance against Egypt's authoritarian regime.

Japanese Embassy confers 'Order of the Rising Sun, Gold & Silver Star' to Rtd Admiral Karambir Singh

The Japan Self-Defence Forces Day 2023 was held by the Japanese Embassy in New Delhi.
The ceremony conferred Admiral Karambir Singh (Retd), the 24th Chief of the Naval Staff with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star for his contribution to strengthening the relationship between India and Japan in national defence.

Prince William's 2023 Earthshot Prize Winners

An agritech startup that helps female farmers in India to cut food waste using solar-powered dehydration equipment is among the five green innovations to scoop the Prince of Wales' prestigious Earthshot Prize.
The winners of the annual eco-awards were revealed at a ceremony at the Theatre at MediaCorp in Singapore.
Each will walk away with £1 million (around $1.2 million) to scale up their pioneering projects.
Prince William and his Royal Foundation launched the ambitious 10-year initiative in 2020, with the goal of funding 50 solutions to some of the planet's most urgent environmental problems by 2030.
The winners for 2023 are:
• Protect and Restore Nature: Acción Andina, from Peru. The grassroots project is working in South America to protect native forest ecosystems across the Andes.
• Clean Our Air: GRST, from Hong Kong. The start-up has developed a new process for making and recycling lithium-ion batteries, paving the way "to make the electric cars of the future even cleaner".
• Revive Our Oceans: WildAid Marine Program, a global organization with US-based headquarters. The non-profit combines "partnership building and knowledge sharing" to support the planet's ocean conservation needs.
• Build a Waste-Free World: S4S Technologies from India. The agritech start-up uses its solar-powered dehydration equipment to cut food waste and help farmers process excess crops into products with a longer shelf life.
• Fix Our Climate: Boomitra, a global organization with US-based headquarters. The company is "removing emissions and boosting farmer profits by incentivizing land restoration" through the creation of its soil carbon marketplace.

RBI Wins 'Changemaker Of The Year' Award

Recently, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was honored with the 'Changemaker of the Year' award. Governor Shaktikanta Das accepted it on behalf of the RBI.
The recognition was part of the Hindu Businessline Changemaker Awards 2023, held at ITC Maurya in New Delhi on November 3.

UST wins 2023 Mahatma Awards for impactful CSR initiatives

Leading digital transformation solutions company UST has won the 2023 Mahatma Awards for sustainable and impactful contributions to corporate social responsibility (CSR) in areas such as education, health, livelihood, environment, and disaster relief.
An initiative of the Aditya Birla Group, the award was presented on Gandhi Jayanti.
A highlight of the company's CSR drive is its Adopt-a-School programme which impacts over 32,000 students in India and Mexico.
UST supports over 104 schools, promoting accessible, quality education for all. Its initiatives include medical support for those with disabilities and habitat restoration projects in Kerala.
The nature conservation and sustainable livelihood project sourced 75,000 medicinal saplings in 2022 alone.
In response to global crises, UST has demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian causes, including a $100,000 pledge to support victims of the conflict in Ukraine.
UST associates from the UK, Ukraine, and Poland volunteered to help distribute essentials in the refugee camps.

India-Born Author Nandini Das Wins 2023 British Academy Book Prize

India-born author Nandini Das has been named the winner of the 2023 British Academy Book Prize for Global Cultural Understanding, a leading international non-fiction prize, for her book 'Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire'.
The winning book is her debut and has been described by critics as the "true origin story of Britain and India told through England's first diplomatic mission to the Mughal courts".

Writer T. Padmanabhan Receives Prestigious Kerala Jyothi Award

Eminent writer T. Padmanabhan has been chosen for the Kerala Jyothi Award 2023 instituted by the Kerala government.
He was selected for the highest civilian honour by the government considering his contributions in the field of Malayalam literature.
The State also announced other 'Kerala Puraskarngals', the highest award given by the government to distinguished personalities who have made outstanding contributions in various spheres of social life.
