World Anaesthesia Day

World Anaesthesia Day is observed annually on October 16 to commemorate the first successful use of ether anaesthesia in surgery, which took place in 1846. The day celebrates the advances in anaesthesiology and recognises the essential role that anaesthesia plays in ensuring patient comfort, safety, and improved surgical outcomes.
On this day in 1846, American dentist Dr. William T.G. Morton administered ether to a patient at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, allowing a painless surgery to take place. This event is widely regarded as the birth of modern anaesthesia, revolutionising surgery by making it possible for patients to undergo complex procedures without the agony of feeling pain.
For 2025, the theme for World Anaesthesia Day 2025 is 'Anaesthesiology in Health Emergencies'.

World Food Day

World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16. It marks the founding of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 1945.
World Food Day was officially established by FAO in 1979, though FAO itself was founded in 1945. The idea emerged at FAO's 20th General Conference. The goal is to remind the world of the issues of hunger, food security, and agriculture. Since then, over 150 countries mark it every year. The creation of this day helps focus attention, prompt discussion, and inspire action to reduce hunger and improve food systems.
The theme for World Food Day 2025 is 'Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future'.

World Students' Day

World Students' Day is celebrated on October 15 each year. This day marks the birth anniversary of India's Former President; Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
The United Nations designated October 15 as World Students' Day to honour Dr. Kalam's birthday, reflecting his legacy and promoting the values he advocated. A fervent supporter of education, Dr. Kalam believed in the ability of students to bring meaningful changes in the world.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed on October 13 every year across the globe.
In 2009, the UN General Assembly decided to designate October 13 as the official date for this day, and also changed the name to International Day for Disaster Reduction. The word Risk was added to the name later.
