Prevention of Blindness Week 2023 Concludes

The Government of India organises the Prevention of Blindness Week from April 1-7 every year to raise awareness about the causes and prevention of blindness. The annual event aims to support individuals with visual impairments, and to promote access to eye care services. Various organizations, including government and non-governmental organizations, conduct activities such as eye camps, free eye checkups, and awareness programs during the week.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, the first Health Minister of India, established the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness and along with it, the observance of the week was started in 1960. The organisation has since participated and collaborated with various other agencies like the Rotary International, and Sight savers to spread awareness on prevention of visual impairment.

World Health Day

World Health Day is observed on April 7 every year. This day is celebrated annually to draw attention to a particular health topic that affects people all over the world.
In 1948, World Health Organisation (WHO) held the First World Health Assembly. The Assembly decided to celebrate April 7 of each year, with effect from 1950, as the World Health Day. The World Health Day is held to mark WHO's founding and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year.
WHO observed its 75th anniversary in 2023.
The theme for the World Health Day 2023 was "Health For All." With this theme, WHO creates an opportunity to look back at public health successes that have helped improve the quality of life over the last seven decades.

International Day of Sports for Development and Peace

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is observed in the world every year on the 6th of April. The day marks a special occasion for the sport to be celebrated as a tool to bring social change and foster peace and understanding.
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is a link to the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896. April 6 was declared as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2013.
The theme for the 2023 International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was 'Scoring for People and the Planet'.

International Day of Conscience

The International Day of Conscience is a global day of awareness celebrated on April 5, commemorating the importance of human conscience. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly on July 25, 2019, with the adoption of UN resolution 73/329. The first International Day of Conscience was celebrated on April 5, 2020.
The International Day of Conscience 2023 was celebrated on the theme 'Building a Culture of Peace'.

National Maritime Day

National Maritime Day is a yearly event celebrated on April 5. This year it was celebrated for the 60th time in India. The first anniversary was held in 1964 to raise awareness about international trade and the economy.
Every year, the day is commemorated to support the global economy, which is the most well-organized, safe, and environmentally responsible way of delivering commodities from one end of the globe to the other.
The first ship built by The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd., The SS Loyalty, travelled from Mumbai to the United Kingdom on April 5, 1919, beginning the history of Indian shipping.
In 1959, India also joined the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The International Marine Organization (IMO) is in charge of maritime safety and pollution prevention.

International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action

The United Nations' International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is celebrated every year on April 4. The day aims to raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication. "Mine action" refers to a range of efforts to clear landmines and explosive remnants of war and to mark and fence off dangerous areas.
On 8 December 2005, the General Assembly declared April 4 as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. It was first observed on April 4, 2006.

World Autism Awareness Day

World Autism Awareness Day is a special day observed to emphasise the significance of supporting people with autism and to improve the quality of their life. April 2 was declared by the UN General Assembly as the World Autism Awareness Day.
The word 'Autism' first appeared in 1911 by Eugen Bleuler, a psychiatrist who used the term to describe a specific cluster of symptoms in schizophrenia. In 1943, Dr. Leo Kanner, a pediatric psychiatrist categorized Autism as a social and emotional disorder. In 1944, Hans Asperger described autism as a children's disorder in which kids face difficulties with social and communication skills.
After enough research on the topic, the UN General Assembly set April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, celebrated each year to encourage people in raising awareness about autistic people and to find new ways to improve the wellness of such people.
The theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2023 was "Transformation: Toward a Neuro-Inclusive World for All".
