Mary Roy, Educator and Champion of Gender Equality, Passes Away
Mary Roy, an educator and a women's rights activist, on whose petition the Supreme Court delivered the landmark judgment against the Travancore Christian Succession Act of 1916 to ensure Christian women an equal share in family property, died after a brief illness. She was 89 and is survived by two children, son Lalit Roy and daughter Arundhati Roy, renowned writer and activist who won the 1997 Man Booker prize.

Karnataka's Divita Rai Crowned LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2022
Divita Rai from Karnataka won the prestigious title of Miss Diva Universe 2022. She was crowned by the reigning Miss Universe 2021, Harnaaz Sandhu, at a lavish ceremony that celebrated the 10th anniversary of the coveted pageant. At the 71st Miss Universe pageant, Rai will be representing India, where Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned as the winner last year. Pragnya Ayyagari of Telangana was declared Miss Diva Supranational 2022.

Last Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev Passes Away
Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War without bloodshed but failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union, died at the age of 91.
Gorbachev, the last Soviet President, forged arms reduction deals with the United States and partnerships with Western powers to remove the Iron Curtain that had divided Europe since World War Two and bring about the reunification of Germany.

Economist and Former Planning Commission Member Abhijit Sen Passes Away
Economist Abhijit Sen, a former Planning Commission member and one of the country's foremost experts on rural economy, passed away. He was 72.
In a career spanning more than four decades, Abhijit Sen taught economics at New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, and held several important government positions including the chair of the Commission of Agricultural Cost and Prices.
He was a member of Planning Commission from 2004 to 2014, when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister.

Live-streaming in SC for 1st Time as CJI Ramana to retire, Poll Freebies Among Last Cases
For the first time in the history of India's Supreme Court, the proceedings of the ceremonial bench of Chief Justice of India NV Ramana will be live streamed. Justice Ramana will retire from office on Friday (August 26) upon attaining the age of superannuation.
The CJI will share the bench with CJI-designate Justice UU Lalit and Justice Hima Kohli. Among is last cases, is the matter on freebies. A three-judge bench headed by CJI Ramana will pronounce its verdict on a PIL seeking ban on "irrational freebies" promised by political parties, which have the effect of "luring voters" and "increasing the budget deficit" of the state.
