Former Punjab Minister and Akali Leader Ranjit Singh Brahmpura Passes Away
Senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Ranjit Singh Brahmpura passed away in Chandigarh. He was 85.
Once dubbed as "Majhe da Jarnail" (General of Punjab's Majha region), Brahmpura, a former MP and four-time MLA, had quit the SAD on a bitter note in 2018, questioning the functioning of Sukhbir Badal as party president and blaming him for the party's debacle in the 2017 Assembly polls.
After parting ways with the SAD, Brahmpura, who had been a close aide of the Akali patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, floated the breakaway faction, SAD (Taksali). Last year (2021), he rejoined the SAD.
Poland's First Astronaut, Mirosław Hermaszewski Passes Away
Poland's only cosmonaut, Gen Mirosław Hermaszewski, who circled the Earth in a Soviet spacecraft in 1978, died. He was 81.
Hermaszewski became a national hero thanks to his trip to space. For nine days in June and July 1978, he and Soviet cosmonaut Pyotr Klimuk circled the Earth in the Soyuz 30 spaceship that docked at the Salyut 6 orbital space station. They went around the globe 126 times.
Renowned Marathi singer Sulochana Chavan passed away after long illness.
Sulochana Chavan was known for her soulful Lavani folk songs. She had a successful singing career of nearly six decades. She was one of the cornerstones of Marathi folk music throughout her life, and along with the Mangeshkar sisters, Chavan was among the greatest female singers in Marathi history.
She was single-handedly responsible for keeping alive and popularizing the Lavani genre of Marathi folk music, which is a genre that combines traditional Marathi songs and dance, especially on the beats of a Dholki.
Earlier this year, Chavan was awarded the Padma Shri and also conferred the title of 'Lavani Samradnyi' (Queen of Lavani) for her contribution to the traditional Maharashtrian musical genre of Lavani, associated with the folk theatre of Tamasha.
She was honoured with the Lata Mangeshkar Award, instituted by the Government of Maharashtra, in 2010. She was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2012. Chavan was awarded the Lokshahir Patthe Bapurao Puraskar instituted by the Pune Municipal Corporation in 2007 and two years later, was bestowed with the Ram Kadam Puraskar.

Ace Artist-writer Manohar Devadoss Passes Away
Renowned artist and writer Manohar Devadoss died in Chennai. He was 85.
Mr. Devadoss has written several books and illustrated them. In 1982, he started writing his book, Green Well Years, about his childhood in Madurai. It took him over a decade to write the book and complete the artwork. He then brought out From an Artist's Perspective and Multiple Facets of my Madurai.
A Poem to Courage, Dreams, Seasons and Promises and Mahe and Mano: Challenges, Resilience and Triumphs are works about his life with his wife, Mahema. His last book, Madras Inked: Impressions of an Artist and an Architect, was co-authored by Sujatha Shankar. His intricate ink drawings of buildings and scenes in Chennai and Madurai are treasured by those who possess them.
A Padma Shri awardee, Mr. Devadoss hailed from Madurai and loved that city as much as he did Chennai. He and his wife brought out thousands of greeting cards with his illustrations every year, with the sale proceeds going to charity.

Noted Economist and Former Union Minister Yoginder K. Alagh Passes Away
Noted economist and former Union Minister Yoginder K. Alagh passed away after a prolonged illness. He was 83.
Professor Alagh was an emeritus professor at the Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research (SPIESR).
Born in present-day Pakistan, he studied at the University of Rajasthan and received a doctorate in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Alagh had stints as a faculty member in Indian and foreign universities, including the IIM-Calcutta, and was Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
In 1996, the United Front government appointed him Minister of Power, Planning and Programme Implementation. He also served as a member of the Planning Commission.
Professor Alagh was also Chairman of the Institute of Rural Management Anand for six years and Chancellor of the Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar.
