President Ram Nath Kovind Addresses the Centenary Celebrations of Gita Press at Gorakhpur

  • The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind graced and addressed the centenary celebrations of Gita Press at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. Speaking on the occasion, the President said that Gita Press has played a very important role in taking the spiritual and cultural knowledge of India to the masses through its publications. He noted that the intention behind the establishment of Gita Press was to make available Gita in pure form with right meaning and at low price to masses which were not easily available at that time. It is a matter of great pride for all of us that a small initiative started from Kolkata is now well known for its work all over India.
  • Apart from the Bhagavad Gita, Gita Press publishes books like Ramayana, Puranas, Upanishads, Bhakt-charitra etc. It has made a record by publishing more than 70 crore books till now and has the distinction of being the world's largest publisher of Hindu religious books.

Union Minister Bhagwant Khuba Launches NSEFI's Pan-India Rooftop Solar Awareness Campaign

  • Union Minister Bhagwant Khuba launched NSEFI's Pan-India Rooftop Solar Awareness Campaign. During the launch ceremony, Shri Khuba said that without the involvement of people, no big idea can succeed. Rooftop Solar provides an opportunity to the common person to make his contribution towards Global Warming & Climate Change. The campaign titled "GHAR KE UPAR SOLAR IS SUPER" shall aim at mobilizing local government, citizens, RWAs, and Municipalities to spread awareness of Solar Rooftop.
  • Ministry is working towards achieving target of 500 GW of non-fossil by 2030. Rooftop solar will play major role and Tier-2 & Tier-3 cities offer maximum potential in achieving this target.

Delhi Govt. to Name Colonies & Streets after Babasaheb Ambedkar

  • Following the Central government's guideline advising against the usage of the word 'Harijan', the Delhi government is set to replace the word 'Harijan' from names of colonies & streets and name them after Babasaheb Ambedkar instead. In this vein, Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam tabled a proposal to rename all streets and colonies under Delhi Government titled as 'Harijan' after Dr. Ambedkar.
  • The Social Welfare Minister also chaired an important meeting in this regard with senior officials to expedite the process with officials from the concerned departments to act on the matter and issue a notification on the same. The Delhi Government strives to uplift the SC, ST, and OBC communities living in the national capital.

Government Mulls Setting up Panel for Social Media Takedowns

  • The Union Government is planning to set up an appellate panel to hear grievances by social media users against operators' decisions to take down content or block accounts. The panel will look into appeals filed by individuals against decisions of grievance officers of social media platforms. According to a draft notification to amend the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the panel has to dispose of appeals within 30 days and its decision will be binding on the social media companies.
  • The aggrieved person can appeal against the decision of the grievance officer concerned before the committee within 30 days of receipt of the order. The committee shall deal with such appeal expeditiously and make an endeavour to it dispose of within 30 calendar days.

Punjab Government Starts e-Stamp Instead Of Paper Stamp

  • The Punjab government abolished the physical stamp papers in an attempt to bring efficiency and check the pilferage of State revenue. Punjab Revenue Minister Bram Shanker Jimpa launched the 'e-stamp facility'. Following this, stamp paper of any denomination can now be obtained via 'e-stamp', which includes computerised print-out from any stamp vendor or from banks authorised by the State government.
  • The Punjab government will pay a commission of 2% to the stamp vendors on e-stamps ranging from Re. 1 to Rs. 19,999, while the general public would get stamp paper at the actual rate. For instance, they will have to pay only Rs. 100 for a stamp paper of Rs. 100 and no extra commission will be levied. This step will also help in curbing the stamp paper-linked fraud.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur Launches Nationwide Fit India Freedom Rider Cycle Rally

  • Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur launched a nationwide 'Fit India Freedom Rider Cycle rally' on World Bicycle Day. Thakur said that by riding a bicycle we can accomplish the goal of the Fit India Movement, the Khelo India movement, the Clean India movement & Healthy India movement. Fit India Movement, Khelo India movement, Clean India movement & Healthy India movement all can be accomplished by riding a bicycle. It'll also cut down the pollution level.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) is of the opinion that providing bicycles to the world's poorest people and communities will help in the prevention of 1.5 million premature deaths and 5 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year.

Pushkar Dhami, Uttrakhand Chief Minister, Keeps Job With Big Poll Win

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami won the Champawat bypoll by a margin of over 55,000 votes. This was a much-needed victory for Dhami to continue to remain as the chief minister as he had lost the state Assembly polls held in February 2022 despite the BJP's landslide victory. Dhami secured 58,258 votes against Congress candidate Nirmala Gahatodi who grabbed only 3,233 votes. Apart from Dhami and Congress' Gahatodi, Manoj Kumar Bhatt from Samajwadi Party and Independent candidate Himanshu Gadkoti were also in the fray. The polling took place on May 31.
  • Dhami, who had lost the Khatima seat in the State Assembly polls, contested from Champawat to become an MLA. According to the Constitution, he needs to fulfil this requirement within six months of being sworn in to continue as the chief minister. The BJP won the popular mandate for the second consecutive term in Uttarakhand, bagging 47 seats in the 70-member Assembly, crushing the Congress' hopes of returning to power.
