Ira Jadhav Smashes 346, Sets Record for Highest U19 Score by an Indian

  • Fourteen-year-old Ira Jadhav scored an unbeaten 346 off 157 balls in the Women's Under-19 One Day Trophy match against Meghalaya. Jadhav smashed 42 fours and 16 sixes and finished with a strike rate of 220.38.
  • This epic knock earned her the distinction of being the first Indian (male or female) to record a triple century in any Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)-organised limited-overs cricket tournament.
  • The record for the highest individual score in a women's U-19 match belongs to South Africa's Lizelle Lee. Playing for Mpumalanga, Lee scored an unbeaten 427 against Kei in 2010.

After Kenya, India Second in List of Banned Athletes with 108 Doping Cases

  • India is currently placed second in the list of countries with the most athletes currently ineligible to participate in international events.
  • According to data made available by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for the year ending December 2024, Kenya tops the list with 119 cases while India is second at 108.
  • Russia is third in the countries with the most ineligible athletes at 73.

Tyson Fury Announces Retirement from Boxing

  • Former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury announced his retirement from boxing just weeks after suffering a second straight defeat at the hands of Oleksandr Usyk.
  • The "Gypsy King" last fought in December 2024 when he lost his rematch against WBA, WBC and WBO champion Usyk in Riyadh.
  • Fury enjoyed two stints as heavyweight champion and retires with a record of 34 wins, two defeats and one draw.

Kho Kho World Cup 2025 in New Delhi

  • The Kho Kho World Cup 2025 kicked off with the opening ceremony at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on January 13 and will conclude with the men's and the women's finals on January 19.
  • The inaugural edition of the kho kho competition, backed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), features 20 men's and 19 women's teams.
  • The Indian men's team is in Group A with Nepal, Peru, Brazil and Bhutan while the women's team is in Group A with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Malaysia and Republic of Korea. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Bangladesh Cricketer Tamim Iqbal Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • Bangladesh's Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement from international cricket. This is the second time he has called time on his career, having previously retired in July 2023 in an emotionally charged press conference, only to reverse the decision within 24 hours after intervention from Bangladesh's then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

BCCI Names New Secretary and Treasurer

  • Devajit Saikia, an advocate and a former wicket-keeper batsman from Assam, succeeded Jay Shah as the new secretary of the Indian cricket board (BCCI). He was elected unopposed—a poll was not contested as there were no contestants, electoral officer A. K. Joti stated in his declaration of results—to the seat left vacant after Shah assumed the office of the International Cricket Council chairman in December last year.
  • Prabhtej Singh Bhatia from Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh (CSCS) was elected the new treasurer replacing Ashish Shelar, who became the Information and Technology Minister in Maharashtra government. Both are relatively unfamiliar names, but come with a wealth of experience in multiple streams.

Australia Announce Champions Trophy Squad: Pat Cummins Named Captain

  • Pat Cummins was named Australia's captain in their preliminary 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy beginning on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE.
  • Australia has been drawn in Group B alongside Afghanistan, England and South Africa, with all their round robin matches to be played in Pakistan at Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Punjab Kings Announce New Captain for IPL 2025

  • India and Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer, the second-most expensive player in the player auction, was appointed captain by Punjab Kings for IPL 2025.
  • Head coach Ricky Ponting said that Shreyas has a great mind for the game. His proven capabilities as captain will enable the team to deliver.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Renuka Singh Thakur Rested for Ireland Series

  • Prolific opener Smriti Mandhana was named captain of the Indian women's cricket team for this month's three-match home ODI series against Ireland after regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was rested. Also given a break was pacer Renuka Singh Thakur.
  • The short series against Ireland began on January 10 and all three games will be played at Rajkot.

Three-Time Olympic Swimming Gold Medallist Katinka Hosszu Announces Retirement

  • Three-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu of Hungary, one of the greatest all-around swimmers, announced her retirement.
  • Known as the "Iron Lady" of swimming for her gruelling repertoire of events, Hosszu competed at five Olympic Games. She was only 15 when she made her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games.
