Nykaa CEO Falguni Nayar is EY Entrepreneur of the Year for 2021

  • Falguni Nayar, the chief executive officer and founder of beauty supply company Nykaa, was named the EY Entrepreneur of the Year for 2021. Nayar will represent India at the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Award on June 9.
  • Nayar, who was an investment banker before becoming an entrepreneur, disrupted a brick-and-mortar industry by taking a digital route to sell beauty products in 2012. Nykaa is among profitable start-ups in the country.
  • Nayar was also the recipient of the EY Entrepreneur of The Year Award in the Start-up category in 2019.

Manipur Film Awards: Bishesh Huirem Becomes First Transgender to Win Best Actor Award

  • In a first in Manipur, transgender actress Bishesh Huirem was honoured with the Best Actor Award in the prestigious Manipur State Film Awards, 2022. Huirem received the award from Manipur Governor La Ganesan.
  • Bishesh Huirem received the award for her sterling performance in portraying a transgender character in the film 'Apaiba Leichil' (floating clouds), which also clinched the Special Mention Award.
  • Huirem expressed immense joy over third gender artistes in Manipur being given the much deserved recognition.
  • Bishesh Huirem is a renowned figure amongst the transgender community with many beauty pageant awards under her belt. She had represented India at the Miss International Queen for Transgender held in Thailand in 2016. She has a degree in professional fashion designs from Garden College, Bangalore.

ICC Players of the Month for March 2022: Babar Azam, Rachael Haynes

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Pakistan skipper Babar Azam and Australia's run-machine Rachael Haynes were named the ICC Men's and Women's Players of the Month for March 2022.
  • Azam received the award ahead of West Indies' Kraigg Brathwaite and Australia Test skipper Pat Cummins, and in doing so, became the first player to win the ICC Men's 'Player of the Month' award on two occasions, after being crowned back in April 2021.
  • Rachael Haynes had a formidable set of displays on the road to Australia's seventh ICC Women's Cricket World Cup trophy. She overcame fellow nominees Sophie Ecclestone (England) and Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa) for the award.

PM Modi to Receive Inaugural Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be honoured with the inaugural Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award, the Mangeshkar family announced. The prime minister will receive the award -- Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar -- on April 24 which marks the 80th death anniversary of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar, the singing legend's father.
  • The Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar will be given every year to only one individual who has made path-breaking, spectacular and exemplary contributions to the nation, its people and society.
  • The Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Awards aim to honour legends from the field of music, drama, art, medical and social work.

World Press Photo of the Year 2022: Kamloops Residential School

  • A photograph by Canadian photographer Amber Bracken titled "Kamloops Residential School" won the 2022 World Press Photo of the Year award. The photo shows children's clothing hung on crosses commemorating the more than two hundred children who died of maltreatment, neglect and disease at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. Ms Bracken's photo also won the Singles award in the regional North and Central America category.
  • The annual World Press Photo of the Year award is part of the World Press Photo Awards, organized by the Dutch foundation World Press Photo. The award rewards photographers for the best single exposure pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism.

40 Get Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards

  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship and Sangeet Natak Awards for the year 2018 on eminent artists at a special function. The Lalit Kala Akademi Awards were also presented.
  • The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship was given to four artistes, while 40 others were honoured with Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards. Lalit Kala Akademi Awards, including three fellowships, were conferred on 23 personalities. The recipients of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship are tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, dancer and choreographer Jatin Goswami, dancer Sonal Mansingh and dance teacher Thiruvidaimarudur Kuppiah Kalyanasundaram.

Veteran Bengali Author Amar Mitra Wins Prestigious O. Henry Award

  • Sahitya Akademi awardee Amar Mitra wrote back in 1977 Gaonburo when he was 26 years old. It fetched him the 1919-founded O. Henry Award, whose past winners include William Faulkner, Saul Bellow and Raymond Carver.
  • The award has reinforced Mr. Mitra's belief that the short story — titled Gaonburo in Bangla and The Old Man of Kusumpur in English — must have some "internal force" for even the Western audience to find it relevant after 45 long years.
  • The story is about a man's journey to a remote village to meet a seer-like figure who is supposed to have answers to all of life's problems. As he makes the difficult journey, people who help him along the way pile him with their own problems, asking him to present their case to the old man.

Geetanjali Shree's 'Tomb of Sand' First Hindi Novel on International Booker Shortlist

  • Author Geetanjali Shree's novel 'Tomb of Sand' became the first Hindi language work of fiction to be shortlisted for the International Booker Prize.
  • Shree's book, translated into English by Daisy Rockwell and described by the judges as "loud and irresistible novel", will compete with five other titles from around the world for the prestigious 50,000 pounds literary prize, which is split evenly between the author and translator.
  • The New Delhi-based author received and was shortlisted for a number of awards and fellowships. 'Tomb of Raid' is one of her first books to be published in the UK.
  • Booker Prize for Fiction, the international prize is awarded every year for a single book that is translated into English.

Journalist Aarefa Johari Awarded Chameli Devi Jain Award 2021

  • A journalist from Mumbai, Aarefa Johari was awarded the Chameli Devi Jain Award for an Outstanding Woman Media person 2021. It was announced by the Media Foundation. Aarefa Johari works for 'Scroll. in' in Mumbai, Maharashtra. In 2020, Neetu Singh got this award. She is associated with 'Goan Connection' media house. Jury: Nirupama Subramania, Githa Hariharan and Ashutosh.
  • The Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Women Mediaperson is an Indian journalism award named after Chameli Devi Jain, an Indian independence activist who became the first Jain woman to go to prison during India's independence struggle. The award was instituted in 1980 by The Media Foundation and is given to women in the field of journalism.
