Bengal's 'One Rupee Doctor' Sushovan Bandyopadhyay Passes Away

  • Sushovan Bandyopadhyay famous as Bengal's 'one rupee doctor' passed away in Kolkata.
  • A doctor and a politician, Bandyopadhyay treated patients for close to 60 years. He had treated people for just one rupee and is fondly known as 'Ek Takar Daktar' (one rupee doctor).
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020. The same year his name was recorded in the Guinness World Records for treating the maximum number of patients.
  • He is an ex-MLA from Bolpur seat and had contested on Congress ticket in 1984. He was a member of Trinamool Congress in the past and was its Birbhum district president but had later quit the party.

Good Friday Agreement Architect David Trimble Dies

  • David Trimble, the Northern Irish leader who steered the region's Protestant majority into an historic peace deal with their Catholic rivals that earned him a Nobel Peace Prize, died aged 77.
  • Trimble, who became Northern Irish first minister in the power-sharing government that emerged from the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, was one of the chief architects of the accord that mostly ended three decades of bloodshed in the region.
  • Trimble and Irish nationalist John Hume jointly received the Nobel Prize in 1998 for their roles in helping end the violence between Catholic nationalists seeking Irish unity and pro-British Protestants wishing to stay in the United Kingdom that claimed some 3,600 lives.

  • Savita Kanswal from Lonthru village in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi became the first woman in India who successfully climbed Mt. Everest and Mt. Makaluin, Asia, in just 16 days.
  • Her passion started in Class 11 when she got a chance for a 10-day Adventure Foundation Course. It was the course where her love for mountains began.
  • She started her mountaineering course in 2013 at the NIM (Nehru Mountaineering Institute), Uttarkashi.

Noted Scientist & ILS Director Dr. Ajay Parida Passes Away

  • Noted scientist and Director, Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar Dr. Ajay Parida passed away. Parida, a Padma Shri awardee, was 58 year old.
  • Former DMET Prof CBK Mohanty who confirmed the death of Dr. Parida, hailed his contribution towards the people during COVID-19 pandemic. The ILS conducted genome sequencing to ascertain Covid variants, essential for proper treatment, under supervision of Dr. Parida.

  • Renowned ghazal singer Bhupinder Singh, known for crooning classics like "Naam Gum Jayega" and "Dil Dhoondta Hai", passed away in Mumbai. He was 82.
  • During his decades-long journey in the film industry, the singer came to be best known for songs like "Do Diwane Shehar Mein", "Ek Akela is Shehar Mein", "Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Aasman", "Duniya Chhute Yaar Na Chhute" and "Karoge Yaad Toh", among others.
  • In his five-decade-long career, Bhupinder Singh had worked with the biggest names of the music industry, from Mohammed Rafi, R.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Gulzar to Bappi Lahiri, among others.

Renowned Artist Achuthan Kudallur Passes Away

  • Achuthan Kudallur, an artist who believed that colours have a language of their own and experimented with their myriad forms in his abstract narratives, passed away. He was 77.
  • A recipient of several awards, including the National Academy Award and Tamil Nadu Lalit Kala Akademi Award, his journey as an artist began in Kudallur in Palakkad district in Kerala, where he was born in 1945.

  • Former Punjab Speaker and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Nirmal Singh Kahlon passed away. He was 79.
  • He was the Rural Development and Panchayat Minister from 1997 to 2002 and the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2012.
