Former Defence Research Body Chief V. S. Arunachalam Passes Away

  • V. S. Arunachalam, a former DRDO Director General, passes away in the US. He was 87.
  • His distinguished career spanned across Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), National Aeronautical Laboratory, and Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory.
  • Arunachalam helmed the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and was the Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister from 1982-92.
  • He was conferred the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (1980), Padma Bhushan (1985), and Padma Vibhushan (1990) for his contribution to engineering science and technology.
  • In 2015, Arunachalam was awarded DRDO's Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution to the field of scientific research and technology.
  • In addition to being the first Indian Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK), Arunachalam served as a member of the advisory and editorial boards of several universities and foundations, including the Materials Research Society Bulletin.

Indian Football Legend Mohammed Habib Passes Away

  • Mohammed Habib, the playmaker par excellence of the 1970s who scored against Pele's New York Cosmos in Mohun Bagan colours and made the football icon take note of his game, passed away. The former India player was 74.
  • A bronze medallist in the 1970 Asian Games in Bangkok under the captaincy of fellow Hyderabadi Syed Nayeemuddin and manager PK Banerjee, Habib has represented the big three of Kolkata Maidan -- Mohun Bagan, East Bengal and Mohammedan Sporting in his heydays, dominating the Mecca of Indian football for a prolonged period in the late 1960s through to the 70s.
  • Following a successful career that saw him gain legendary status and earn the tag of the country's first "true professional" footballer for his refusal to accept numerous job offers that came his way owing to his on-field heroics, Habib took to coaching at the Tata Football Academy (TFA).
  • Later, he also acted as chief coach of the Indian Football Association academy in Haldia.

Eminent Scientist Padma Shri MRS Rao Passes Away

  • Manchanahalli Rangaswamy Satyanarayana Rao, popularly known as MRS Rao, an eminent Indian scientist and Padma Shri awardee, passed away.
  • He was well known for his discipline, scientific knowledge, patience, soft-spoken nature and mentorship of PhD students.
  • He was the president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.
  • Rao was the first scientist to initiate Chromatin Biology research in India.
  • He was honoured with the Padma Sri award in 2010 for his contributions to the field of science and engineering.
  • He was also honoured by the Karnataka state government with the Sir MV Visvesvaraya Award for his contribution to the field of science and research.
  • He was also the chairman of many central government science committees. He was also on all committees of the Indian Council of medical research.

Sulabh International Founder Bindeshwar Pathak Passes Away

  • Sulabh International founder, Padma Bhushan recipient, and social worker Bindeshwar Pathak passed away at the age of 80.
  • Credited with bringing in the revolutionary Sulabh Complex public toilet system to India, which contributed significantly to reducing open-defecation and manual scavenging, Pathak was closely associated with his non-profit and worked till the end.
  • Born and educated in Bihar, Pathak had founded Sulabh International Social Services Organisation in 1970 to introduce a public toilet system in India that would go on to become a feature of hundreds of towns. He was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for social work and later became an ambassador for the government's Swachh Bharat Mission.

Renowned author Hari Narke passes away in Mumbai

  • Renowned author and vice-president of Samata Parishad, Mr. Hari Narke, passed away in Mumbai today after suffering a heart attack. He was 70. Mr. Narke was the professor of Mahatma Phule chair at Savitribai Phule Pune University and a former member of the Maharashtra Backward Class Commission. He was also a member of the Rangnath Pathare committee which was formed to collect evidence to prove Marathi as a classical language.
  • In his condolence message, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the State has lost an intellectual who was a pillar for the preservation and promotion of progressive ideology.
  • Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the State has lost a great researcher and guide, who was critical to effectively propagating the thoughts and ideals of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Dr. B R Ambedkar.
  • Recalling Mr. Narke as someone who was at the forefront to fight for OBC rights, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said Mr. Narke was not only a scholar but a foot soldier for all those who belonged to the weaker and marginalized sections of the society

Filmmaker Siddique passes away at private hospital in Kochi

  • Prominent filmmaker Siddique passed away at a private hospital in Kochi last night. He was 63. Siddique's journey in the world of Malayalam cinema began with his directorial debut, "Ramji Rao Speaking" along with his friend Lal. The duo created some of the Malayalam film industry's biggest comedy blockbusters, including "In Harihar Nagar," "Godfather," "Vietnam Colony," "Ramji Rao Speaking," and "Friends," among others. He also directed films in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.
  • Siddique carved a niche for himself in the hearts of film lovers with his innovative storytelling and versatile filmmaking style. He wove intricate narratives around relatable characters, skillfully blending humor and emotions.
  • The mortal remains of Siddique will be placed at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium for the public to pay homage this morning. The burial will take place at the Ernakulam Central Juma Masjid this evening.

William Friedkin, Director of 'The Exorcist,' Dies at 87

  • William Friedkin, a filmmaker whose gritty, visceral style and fascination with characters on the edge helped make The French Connection and The Exorcist two of the biggest box-office hits of the 1970s, died on Monday at his home in the Bel Air neighbourhood of Los Angeles. He was 87.
  • The cause was heart failure and pneumonia, said his wife, Sherry Lansing, the former head of Paramount Pictures in Hollywood.
