Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake

  • The devastating earthquake which struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday has claimed more than a thousand lives so far. Myanmar's Junta said on Saturday that at least 1,002 people had been killed and 2,376 others injured. The death toll and injuries are expected to rise. In Thailand, at least eight people died in the capital, where a high-rise building under construction collapsed.
  • The devastation caused by the Myanmar-Thailand earthquake, shown in dozens of shocking videos and photos circulating on social media, has caused concerns in India too. India has recorded 159 earthquakes of varying magnitudes from November 2024 to February 2025, with the latest being a magnitude 4.0 in Delhi on February 17, as per a PIB press release. Many people have observed that earthquakes have been occurring more frequently in recent years.

Darjeeling's Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park Launches DNA Preservation Project

  • The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling has become India's first zoo to preserve DNA samples of wildlife found in snowy regions. The project, launched in collaboration with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, aims to aid conservation efforts for endangered species. Chief Wildlife Warden Debal Roy confirmed that 60 DNA samples from indigenous animals, including red pandas and snow leopards, have already been collected. 
  • This cryogenic conservation initiative will support future research and genetic studies, ensuring that even if certain species face extinction, their genetic material remains preserved.

BPCL Inaugurates Floating Solar Power Plant at Kochi Refinery

  • Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) took a significant step toward sustainable energy with the inauguration of its floating solar power plant at the Kochi Refinery, Kerala. The project was formally inaugurated by Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan. This marks a major milestone in BPCL's efforts to integrate renewable energy sources into its operations.
  • The plant has an installed capacity of 3.2 MW AC.
  • It has been constructed on the rainwater harvesting pond within the Kochi Refinery premises.

World's Glaciers are Losing Record Ice as Global Temperatures Climb, U.N. Says

  • Glaciers around the globe are disappearing faster than ever, with the last three-year period seeing the largest glacial mass loss on record, according to a UNESCO report released in March 2025.
  • The 9,000 gigatons of ice lost from glaciers since 1975 are roughly equivalent to an ice block the size of Germany with the thickness of 25 meters, said Michael Zemp, director of the Switzerland-based World Glacier Monitoring Service.
  • The report coincided with a UNESCO summit in Paris marking the first World Day for Glaciers (March 21), urging global action to protect glaciers around the world.

The 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority

  • The 30th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is being held from March 17 to 28, 2025, in Jamaica. Nearly 170 member states and the European Union convened to discuss deep-sea mining regulations. This meeting comes amid increasing pressure from mining industries eager to exploit seabed resources. The ISA's primary responsibilities include developing a mining code and protecting the marine environment from potential damage due to mining activities.
  • The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is an independent organization formed in 1994.
  • It was created when the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) became effective in 1982.
