New Garcinia Species Found in Assam

Researchers discovered a new species of tree, Garcinia kusumae, in Assam, enriching the region's floral biodiversity.
Garcinia kusumae is a newly identified species in the genus Garcinia, locally known as thoikora in Assamese.
The Garcinia genus includes 414 species globally, with 33 species and 7 varieties found in India. Assam alone hosts 12 species and 3 varieties.
Garcinia kusumae is a dioecious evergreen tree, growing up to 18 meters, flowering from February to April, and fruiting from May to June.

Union Minister C.R. Patil Launches C-FLOOD, India's First Unified Flood Forecasting Platform

Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C. R. Patil, inaugurated C-FLOOD, a Unified Inundation Forecasting System. Developed collaboratively by C-DAC, CWC, and NRSC, this web-based platform provides two-day advance flood forecasts at the village level, aimed at enhancing preparedness and mitigating flood risks in vulnerable regions. The project is part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), showcasing India's synergy of science and technology in tackling climate challenges.

SBI to Solarise 4 Million Indian Homes by 2027

The State Bank of India (SBI) announced its ambitious goal of solarising 4 million homes by the financial year 2026–27. This initiative is part of SBI's broader sustainability vision aligned with India's Net Zero 2070 commitments. The announcement came as SBI celebrated its 70th anniversary, underscoring its legacy and future vision as a leader in not only banking but also national development.

Kerala Tops National Evaluation of Protected Areas for 2020-2025

Kerala was ranked the top-performing state in the Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) of National Parks and Protected Areas (PAs) for the cycle 2020–2025, conducted by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. With a score of 76.22%, Kerala is the only state to receive a "Very Good" rating. Its Eravikulam National Park, home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, scored the highest among individual protected areas, reflecting Kerala's outstanding conservation practices.

Elusive Return: Asiatic Wild Dog Spotted Again in Kaziranga Landscape

The Asiatic wild dog, or dhole (Cuon alpinus)—a shy and endangered carnivore long thought to have vanished from Assam's Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong Landscape (KKAL)—was photographed again after years of absence, signalling a potentially important revival for the species in the region. A study conducted by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), presented camera-trap evidence of the dhole in the Amguri animal corridor, one of the critical wildlife linkages in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot.

India's Longest Animal Overpass Corridor Unveiled on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) constructed the country's first wildlife overpass corridor on a national highway. Spanning a 12-kilometre stretch of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which cuts through the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve's buffer zone, the project includes five overpasses and India's longest wildlife underpass, all designed to enable safe animal movement without disturbing natural habitats.
The project marks the first instance in India where a national expressway was designed keeping wildlife conservation at its core. Given increasing human-animal conflicts near protected zones, this overpass represents a model for eco-sensitive infrastructure and highlights India's commitment to sustainable development.
