Scientists Discover 400-Mile-long Chain of Fossilised Volcanoes Buried Beneath China

Researchers uncovered a massive, 400-mile-long chain of extinct, fossilised volcanoes deep under South China, revealing a surprising new chapter in Earth's geological history. This ancient volcanic arc formed around 800 million years ago during the early Neoproterozoic era, when two tectonic plates collided during the breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia.

Kaziranga Ranks Third Globally in Tiger Density

Kaziranga Tiger Reserve in Assam, famous for its one-horned rhinoceros, has now made headlines for another reason – it has the third-highest tiger density in the world. This was revealed in a report on the status of tigers, released on Global Tiger Day (July 29, 2025) by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
As per the report, 148 tigers were recorded across the 1,307.49 sq. km reserve in 2024. This is a big jump compared to previous years.

Pralhad Joshi Inaugurates 435 MW Gorbea Solar Power Plant

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi officially inaugurated the massive 435 MW Gorbea Solar Power Plant in Rajasthan, delivered in just under eight months, an impressive feat of speed and sustainability. Spanning 1,250 acres and backed by a 25-year power purchase agreement with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), the clean-energy project is expected to generate approximately 755 GWh annually—enough to power nearly 128,000 homes—and reduce carbon emissions by about 705,000 tonnes each year.

In a step towards strengthening India's maritime environmental protection framework, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) launched 'Samudra Prachet', the final of two indigenous Pollution Control Vessels (PCVs) at Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL). This vessel will play a crucial role in enhancing India's oil spill response capabilities within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), supporting the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative through indigenisation of strategic maritime assets.

India's First Hornbill Conservation Centre

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated India's first Centre of Excellence for Hornbill Conservation at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) in Coimbatore district. This pioneering effort aims to protect hornbills, vital seed dispersers in tropical forests, threatened by habitat loss and climate change. Funded with Rs. 1 crore under the Endangered Species Conservation Corpus Fund, the Centre will focus on research, habitat restoration, and community involvement to safeguard four hornbill species native to the Western Ghats.
Hornbills are crucial for forest regeneration. They disperse seeds of native trees, maintaining biodiversity and forest health. Known as farmers of the forest, these birds support the growth of species like fig and canarium trees. Their decline affects entire ecosystems and other wildlife dependent on forest habitats.
